Dull Spot on Bowl

Just got this Estate pipe and it has a dull spot on the bowl shaped like a thumbprint. It's not a burn out just looks like its been warn in one spot. Or maybe someone spilt something on the finish. Not sure but, any cheap easy fixes? Preferably a common household product I already have laying around. Thanks.

Looks like it had shellac or some other coating. A paper towel and acetone will remove the rest then you can shine it up.

After acetone shine it with just regular pipe wax?

Yup I agree. It's be easier to take it down, and start fresh then try to mask that spot. Much easier than you think! And who knows, maybe you will like it without wax!

I've had this when I miss a spot buffing with carnuba wax.

That's a common spot on pipes for cigarette scorches when left in an ashtray. It could be that someone removed a scorch mark and took the finish off with it, leaving that dull patch.

Starting fresh is probably the best option if it bothers you.

Good to know. I drink a lot of coffee. I didn't think it would do that to a bowl.

That makes sense. I was thinking someone had a habit of rubbing their thumb back and forth on it for years.

I got water on my oldest pipe and it got a dull spot. Thought it was the finish coming off and then I realized it cleaned up the patina or something like that.

Looks more like a thin varnish bubbled and flaked off.

I don't think so because its realllllly smooth around it like no edge to it.

I think it just looks like it was scuffed up a bit. I’d buff it out. You could use an old clean terry cloth towel and some Rottenstone to bring back the shine.
