The differences I have noticed are based on dryness of tobacco and packing. If I dry my tobacco until crisp and pack light, all my pipes smoke about the same with respect to dottle. If I don’t, for any of the many good reasons there might be, cobs and meers are definitely more forgiving.

I've never noticed a difference, all shape configurations smoke the same to me.

Try packing it tighter.
Chasingembers is right. I have every pipe shape imaginable and can get a decent smoke out of any of them. Some better than others, no doubt. So either I'm the luckiest pipe collector on the planet when it comes to quality drilling or some other factor is affecting your enjoyment. See these other comments and consider what might be the cause. That, or just throw away a bit of black tobacco at the end of your smoke which we all have done.
