Hello ladies and gents!
I am a big fan of corn cob pipe. Affordable but great smokes! I have couple of them. Unfortunately, it seems like there are some pipes that are not "meant" to smoke well? What I mean by that is, I have a Legend and a Country Gentleman. They do not seem to deliver clean, pure smoke compared to other cobs I have. Other ones smoke so pure and clean that I can see why they are called Missouri Meerschaum! :puffy:
I've smoked Legend and CG many times, enough to have them coated with some carbon in the bowl. (Of course, not enough to cause cobs to split). Yet, their smokes are tasteless and they seems to block the nuisance and taste. Maybe I got a bad ones...?
I was wondering if they will get better with time, or unfortunately, will not get any better?

I have yet to meet a Missouri Meerschaum cob that did not perform like a champ. I have met quite a few.

What are your other cobs and what blends are you smoking?
While a cob pipe will generally smoke anything well, some of the shapes do better with certain blends than others.
For example, I wouldn't stuff the CG full of a straight Virginia or the Legend with a Latakia blend.

I've had some quality control issues, but most smoke beautifully. As the fellow above me said, could be a tobacco/pipe mismatch.

I've not smoked many cobs, around half a dozen but I've never smoked a cob that smoked English blends well, they seem to dull the oriental right down

I am on the side of the unlucky guys: I have just one MM cob and it doesn't smoke good at all.

I don't know the name of the shape, so I'm showing a picture:

Are you sure that the two in question aren't drawing air where the stem meets the bowl? I had that happen with a MO Pride I got in a grab bag from MM.

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
I recently purchased a MM Mark Twain and find the sweetness of the cob itself can affect some lighter blends such as Golden Glow but with a more robust blend such as Bold Kentucky it is barely noticeable.
I am reliably informed the sweet flavour will disappear with more use.
The fact that I am smoking a filter pipe sans filter I am told this shouldn't affect the smoke but am not 100% sure of this.
Regards,
Jay.

Are you smoking them with the filter installed?
I smoke cobs a lot, but never with blends that have any noticeable amount of Latakia. To me, cobs and Lat disagree; the flavor gets muted and they taste "off".
Some of my cobs are more stellar than others, but they are all better than just good.

All of my Cobs smoke great. When the Cobbits were released I purchased a Wizard. When I got it it tasted like lacquer the first time I smoked it l. I emailed MM and they sent me a new one instantly. New one smokes great!

Thank you all for your thoughts/inputs! I appreciate them!! Maybe I just might have gotten a bad ones... I also firmly believe that MM stood the test of time and they smoke really great.
@lohengrin: That shape is Country Gentleman. Beautifully shaped cob!
@dustmite: If I am understanding correctly, there could be a gap between the stem and the shank, which draws extra air into it? I believe the stems are tight when I smoke, but I will double check!
@aldecaker: I only use Balsa when I smoke aromatic blends, but besides that, I do not use any filters in cobs.
@cobguy: The ones that smoke great are : Missouri Pride, Dane Egg, Tom Sawyer, and Morgan. I have tried different kinds of blends in Legend and CG like CH, SWR, FM Cellar, Newminster Navy Flake, 1-Q, LBF, etc... Unfortunately, although I can smell the room note, I taste nothing but just hot air (even with non-aromatic)
But the good ones I mentioned above smoke great. Personally, FM worked really so well in Pride that I thanked God for allowing me to smoke this blend!! :puffy:

My only quibble is with the small cob pipes like the Eaton and Tom Sawyer pipes. My pipe nail is too big for them.
