As I have been warming up to pipe smoking again, I ordered a few tins from a tobacco shop online, and they did not charge state tax or an excise tax. In Florida the excise tax is 85% of wholesale I learned for Other Tobacco Products which apparently includes pipe tobacco. I was curious if all shops online charge this tax as is laid out in the laws or if there are some out there still that are currently not including the taxing that way. I was wanting to buy a few bulk blends, Peter Stokkebye Proper English and Cornell and Diehl Engine #99 and saw that the place I was looking at where it was available would charge the excise tax.

My other question I guess is why was it that the four tins I just purchased online did not have that tax included while this attempt appears it would? The former is a very large online shop.

I don't believe sites other than Tobacco Pipes charge the excise tax, perhaps just the sales tax. Being located in FL, I think Tobacco Pipes has to charge it. If you live elsewhere, they don't charge any kind of tax and are great to deal with.

Florida is the land of douche bags 85 percent tax on the wholesale price of pipe tobacco ruining the business for Florida residents like me.
Now if you are a cigar smoker there is no tobacco tax for you, that's right ZERO. How the fuck that happens is obvious. The cigar lobby has some juice and the pipe mfgs just bend over and take it in the ass.

TP does not charge the 85% excise tax. I purchase from them about once a months and I am in Florida. They have not added it to my purchases. I use PayPal checkout.

All states charge excise tax on tobaccos. While online sites now collect sales tax following the SCOTUS decision, they don't collect excise tax. You are expected to pay it yourself. At this point states are only beginning to share data on tobacco purchases with each other, so it's still possible that you might get by with not paying the tax, but don't expect that situation to last. Do expect to get hit with a whopper of a penalty when data sharing gets up and running.
