Best deep cleaning. What to use?
I'd spend a few hours looking up Rebornpioes.
Lots and lots of sound advice and lots of before and after pics.
Gave me my start and confidence in cleaning up estates.

Just one suggestion - use cotton balls rather than salt when doing an alcohol soak. Much less mess.
Most of my pipes are estates which I've cleaned myself.
While alcohol retorts and coffee grounds no doubt work, I've not had to resort to those methods ever.

It pays to take a really good look at the shank and mortise.
In my experience that's the source of most problems with evil smelling/tasting estates.

I tried the coffee ground suggestion, and it really softened the cake, so beware if that's not what you want. I ended up just scraping the cake out with a pipe tool, but it was a pipe I was going to rededicate to a new tobacco, so I didn't mind.
