Cracked the Mortise of My New Pipe

I have some Gorilla tape I needed for a specific repair. That'd be excellent, as it has a matte finish, is wide, and, well, strong like a gorilla....!

I've never had a glued repair hold for any length of time. I've banded two pipes myself, and it was difficult but doable (with bands from vermont freehand). But you have to fix the tightness problem. I had to buy 2 bands to get the right fit, and it was a challenge for sure. There is a big difference between 12mm and 12.5mm. If you access to a bunch of bands, I suspect there would be a natural variation and would let you find a better fit. I carefully manhandled them on with heat and cold and then had to refit the tenon because they were too tight. I did a sterling silver one on a meerschaum with a not-so-obvious taper and had to carefully sand off the last 1/16".

You can send it to Mike Myers at Walker Briar works if you want a quality repair. I'm sure he has tricks to make this much easier than it was for me. But my repairs basically cost me $3-5 and gave me some satisfaction (after I didn't screw it up haha). I wouldn't attempt it on a favorite pipe.
