Cracked Morta Bowl: Concern or just Build a Cake?

Greetings,

I have received a Eltang basic Morta, and the bowl seemed to crack beyond the craggy sandblast and into the bowl.

I know Morta’s are different than briar, and this one seems to stem from the outside in. Of course, I would rather take advice from people of knowledge than deal with it myself. Is it salvageable, a dud, or just smoke away?

Send it back would be my vote. Morta is kinda brittle compared to Briar, in my experience.

Yeppers, let Tom know about that. That is unusable as it is. And... mortas are starting to seem like a no go for me, since mine caught on fire on the very first smoke.

I'd bring it to the attention of the seller/carver.

I have a Morta pipe with a cracked mortise, I discovered the crack after smoking it a few times. The manufacturer (Briarworks) replaced it with no question and let me keep the original. Mike Meyers banded it for me and it's been fine ever since.
