Has anyone noticed a difference in quality/consistency between C&D's bulk and tinned offerings? I'm thinking about ordering some C&D bulk tobacco, so I'm curious what your experiences have been.

The C&D blends I order in bulk - mostly Yorktown, John Marr, Derringer - all come in a fair state if not sometimes on the dry side. I mostly buy their flake/broken flake blends in the tin and find that they come a bit moist but nothing out of the ordinary. I don't think the bulk blends are at all of a lower quality. Good luck!

One of the perennial dumb, thick as a plank, pipe community myths is that the bulk VS tin version of a blend is different. In what universe does it make financial sense to set up two pipelines to spew out two differing versions of the same blend, one for bulk and another tins?

Perceived differences are either imagined, or the result of the bulk remaining in plastic bags, which are permeable, and which allow the contents to dry out over time.

I suppose maybe I could have worded my question better, but I'm not expecting two different products, but checking to see if the quality is different, as in the bulk being excessively dry or the "left overs" of what got placed in tins.

This, and things come dryer because they aren't sealed so more chances in shipping and storage to dry out a bit, personally the couple times I've bought bulk from them they actually come a lot closer to my smoking preference than their tin stuff.

My Yorktown bulk arrived pretty crispy but it’s still delicious. I’ve been told tinned flake versions are better than bulk ribbon. Bayou morning and star of the East are the only two I know off the top of my head. If you find you enjoy the bulk ribbon enough why pay tin prices for the flake?

If you want a perfect representation of the blend go with tins. If you don’t mind a bit of a gamble, go with bulk. Same product, however the bulk may be drier and more broken up vs. tin. I almost always go with bulk, 1 pound bags where applicable. I’ve purchased many ounces of C&D tobacco’s in bulk and I can’t remember being disappointed by the presentation or quality. I prefer ordering from the source, smoking pipes.

p.s. I think @sablebrush52 is onto something also, with ". . . the bulk remaining in plastic bags, which are permeable, and which allow the contents to dry out over time." Of course, he's likely smoked several thousand bowls more than I! :)

There is also how the retailer stores it, i bought bulk from SPC and the same bulk from PipesandCigars and P&Cs bulk was much much dryer, i def prefer the SPC humidity, and that has happened a couple times between those two suppliers,

I was wondering this myself. Not so much about quality or them using different grades of leaf, just if there was any noticeable difference. I love Bayou Morning & John Marr, but I’ve only tried BM in flake & JM in bulk. If the only difference is moisture, then I’ll start buying them in bulk so I don’t run out so fast. Just need them to go on sale🤣🤣

Only the Haunted Bookshop. The tinned version seemed a little better in gathered flavor, nothing too drastic though.

I have bought a lot of C&D bulk offerings over the years and I have never been disappointed with their quality. I like it when the tobacco comes a bit dryer, but even with the bulk stuff I sometimes dry it out just a tad more to get a easy burn. I wish they were able to offer all their blends in bulk so we could save some money and stock up!

Only C&D tins I’ve bought are blends I didn’t see available in bulk.
That said, the first 4oz bull purchase I bought was 5 or 6oz of Habana Daydream from a local B&M (a cigar shop with a few bulk jars and maybe a dozen tins). It was the last of their stock, so it was fairly dry and bottom of the barrel “shake” for the most part.
I don’t think they have much turnover on their inventory, because the tins I did buy were 5yr old at the freshest.
I need to drop back by now that I know better and see if there’s and tobaccos that I now know I like, haven’t been there since I first picked up a pipe last fall.
