i assume this is not the popular corndog shape or is it? Any idea on when this shape was made?

That's the "Acorn " shape and can now only be found on the MM Cobbit Series Shire pipes.
Prior to the cobbits, that was their Great Dane egg.

I like churchwardens and other long stems, but I think I like the cob acorn bowl better with the shorter stem. It sets off the interesting shape better, to me. I'm ambivalent about theme pipes. I somewhat feel we are each our own themes and don't have to borrow, or I'm just cantankerous.

These older Cobs are much better made (at least to me). Beefier cob, much nicer stem, this one even has a nice gold band and not the tiny brass thing the newer ones have..

Something went awry with the pipe cob crop about ten years ago and the bowls got quite puny, but since then, I think the crops have improved and the bowls have gotten bigger again. I think the poor years were a stretch of drought. My recent special edition pipes with acrylic stems have had good diameter bowls, deep too.

Yes, "Great Dane" Egg. The early "Great Dane" pipes came in several shapes that were very, very vaguely Danish, but that soon switched to the Egg and Spool.
