My guess is the pipe was actually made out of a piece of some sort of refrigeration equipment. The coil doesn't look functional to me.

Copper cooling tube style heat sink. Looks crazy though on a pipe...
They are used on computers and some other electronics in a slightly different configuration.

cleidophoros, that is an interesting pipe too. I went through all the oddballs on that site one night, neat to see some strange ideas. The one you have linked features "active" cooling though, in that the smoke travels through the coils. Bah, imagine cleaning that! :roll: Whereas the originally posted pipe looks to be a "passive" cooling system where the coil wicks heat away from the stem, but the smoke just travels through the stem. It is interesting to see the innovations (often failed) that products endured over the years. I bet yadan (our resident metal fanatic) probably has a metal stem somewhere with cooling fins on it...I would be shocked if that method of cooling was not also tried.
