Cherry Crumble Cake

My former neighbor has smoked Captain Black Cherry since he was in law school back in the ‘60’s. I would smoke it with him when we would get together. After I moved away I ordered 8 oz. of Wilke Cherry Cavendish for him, which he likes, but he said it doesn’t burn well for him. I told him to dry it well, so not sure what is going on.

His beautiful wife of over 60 years recently passed and I want to do something to take his mind off from it for a bit. I figured I could make a cherry crumble cake in the noodle press. I tried two Hobbit’s weed variations with blending components I had on hand. One using C&D Cherry and the other using Captain Black Cherry. Both were just OK. I saw @gord had the recipe below.

“My original formula to soften the Captain Black Cherry was 7 parts SIR WALTER RALEIGH and 3 Parts Captain Black Cherry Cavendish.”

That sounds pretty good. I don’t have SWR on hand, but I am smoking Old Joe Krantz Blue right now and am wondering if that may be a good substitute for the SWR. I will press a one ounce cake and give it a try.

I have thought about infusing some Daughter’s and Ryan burley and Virginia, maybe a touch of BCA, with cherry liquor.

I want to give him something unique, with a personal touch. Any other suggestions for home cherry blends that taste good and burn well?

Yes. My buddies have come to prefer 3 parts Captain Black Cherry Cavendish and 7 parts Borkum Riff Dark Cavendish over the same mix proportions with SWR. The plum/prune undertone of the BR mixes beautifully with the CB - and is a bit smoother than the SWR.

However, if you like chewing tobacco, SWR is absolutely the best plain tobacco you can get (at least imho) as a chew. I use it all the time when hunting or target shooting at the local rifle range. Tastes wonderful! And of course, is a first class tobacco to smoke in it's own right.

But give your idea a shot. It's always better to make it personal, rather than from another source. It sounds like it could be a winner.

Hello The Cherry Cavendish might be to moist for him we blended it fresh and ship it out unlike the pre pack which tend to dry out sitting around. On home blending I would use a cherry topping syrup unless you want the alcohol taste.

It's as easy as mixing the proportions together in a jar, and letting it sit for a week to "mix." That's it.

I think common sense dictates that we prepare our just bought tobacco to our own tastes with respect to dryness, moistness, etc. I prefer my tobaccos to be on the dry side, but others may differ. If it's too moist out of the package, i dry it to my liking on a dry cutting board. Most tobaccos are on the moist side when you open them up.

I'm not so far into home blending yet that I'm using syrups, chemicals, and so forth. When that happens, it's a different ball game and at this point the KISS principle is in operation.

It burns like the component tobaccos . . . . you have to dry out the mix a touch as you would if you were smoking the tobacco out of the pouch. Most tobaccos are a bit moist out of the pouch or can. After you mix, prepare accordingly to your own taste.

Hello John, I am glad you responded. I don’t want to give the impression that your blends don’t smoke well. I have never had an issue. I am going to tell my friend to dry it out more, and pack looser. He loves the Cherry Cavendish flavor so I want him to have a good smoking experience. I have smoked many of your aros. They are all top shelf. My favorites being Vermont Maple Cavendish, 191, and Rumcake. As you stated, they come fresh and moist so require some drying for my preference. The flavor holds up well to drying.

I wouldn’t consider myself a home blender, just a mixer. So, I won’t be getting into toppings. I like playing around with the noodle press. I will keep experimenting, and maybe pick up a bottle of Cherry liquor and try an infusion. I had a whiskey infusion that turned out well. I might stove it before pressing.

Gord, l will try the OJK Blue/Captain Black Cherry mix to your proportions. I am going to try stoving before pressing, or at least zap it in the microwave to warm it up and get the juices flowing a bit. I’ll post back with the results. It will be this weekend before I commence. A week in the press and then a week in a jar before I try it.

I also want to try an infusion with cherry liquor For something totally different. The good stuff isn’t cheap , but I guess my friend is worth it. He used to treat me to his Macallan 18 Year Double Cask occasionally.

I did a one ounce sample of 70/30 mix of OJK Blue/CB Cherry. I zapped it in the microwave until it was nice and warm, then put it in the noodle press for a week. I turned the handle a bit every day in the morning and evening. I ended up with a nice, dense cake. I put the cake in a four ounce jar for a week before testing it. It smokes well enough. It burns well but the taste is just average. I think it’s time to try an infusion with cherry liqueur.

I stopped at the liquor store and was approached by a store employee as I’m looking at the many cherry liqueurs. I told him what I was planning to do and he said “I like science projects”. He recommended a cherry brandy from Germany instead of the liqueur. It sounded good to me so I bought a bottle. I got it home and opened it up. It smelled like vodka with just a hint of cherry. It’s a no go. Oh well, I can try using it to clean my pipes. I will buy a bottle of cherry liqueur and see how that goes.

Yes, very little cherry smell. Smells like vodka. I might use it in a mixed drink as a substitute for vodka. I think it would basically give an alcohol aroma to the tobacco with very little cherry aroma. Not going to chance it.

Have you tried it? If so, what are your thoughts on the taste? I can’t drink alcohol anymore, so I only smelled it.

Speaking of German brandy, I used to enjoy Asbach German brandy on occasion, good stuff.

Yeah, I should have known it was just distilled cherries as it is clear. The liqueur will have added botanicals and such.

Send him some Watch City Cigar Bada-Bing. Not a home blend and doesn’t have the personal touch but it’s a damn fine cherry blend.
