No shape number on this one. Stamped MADE BY HAND on the shank where the Shape number usually is.I’ve seen the shape before; I don’t think it’s all that uncommon.
There should be a shape number on the shank. Or it’s worn down, never got stamped.
In any case it looks like a solid pipe. Smoke it in good health…
I can't see any traces of the CP mark either, but I think it is the original stem. I do not think this is a 371 Trafalgar. The shank is shorter and the stem is longer on the 371s I've seen. please look the links below and let me know what You think. The shape is called a Trafalgar I believe. Nice pipe! There should be a faint CP on the stem, maybe the stem is upside down or it's a replacement. I seen no signs of the CP in your photo.
Thanks for the info. But is I wrote to Briarcutter I don't believe this is a 371 partly because of the stampings but mainly the longer shank and shorter stem on mine.Yep, Trafalgar. Shape 71. X for saddle mouthpiece.
In the seventies they were stamped 171X, or 371X depending on bowl size.
Lovely pipe, great grain. The Distinction is not a lower graded grade.
1961-1965.
It's called a "right after lunch at the pub Trafalger"No shape number on this one. Stamped MADE BY HAND on the shank where the Shape number usually is.

Thank You!The Trafalger was a shape in Charatan's repertory...in the '70s I had an After Hours Executive in this shape; no shape number. Into the '60s they stopped putting shape numbers on their higher grade (above Special/Belvedere/ Relief grades) pipes, i.e. Distinction, Executive, Selected et al. Your pipe IS a Trafalger but wouldn't bear the standard shape mark. As to the CP on the stem, it has probably just been buffed off over time.

Thanks a million! I really appreciate You taking the time and share your knowledge.Charatan's numbered pipes conformed to a pretty rigid standard as to size, shape, length, etc (their 1951 catalogue is a good example of this: they even give the WEIGHT the pipe is supposed to be!). Your pipe is a hand-made variation of one of their familiar and famous shapes, a shape in their vocabulary but with a difference...a longer shank for one thing. I'll venture the belief that I've long held, that after Lane bought Ben Wade out, the Wades and Charatan lower grades (again, the Belvederes, Specials, etc) were all made on Wade machinery (with some exceptions...you will find freehand Charatan Specials, etc that are clearly hand-made and just don't measure up grain-wise to, say, a Distinction or Rarity): if the pipe turned out clean it became a Belvedere, etc, and if it needed filling it became a Ben Wade. These shapes all bore shape numbers...the hand-turned pipes did not. Member Greeneyes could weigh in and correct me or confirm my Wade/Charatan idea. So my thought is sometime between the 1951 catalogue, when ALL pipes produced bore shape numbers, and the time Lane acquired Ben Wade, the numbers vanished for the high-grades.
Thanks, but I will always qoute You as my source! After my last post I turned to Pipedia's Ben Wade page and learned that my "theory" re: Ben Wade/Charatan machine-made pipes is a commonplace. One of my old American Studies/English professors once commented to me that a sociologist was someone who needed a Ford Grant to discover the obvious. I'm not a sociologist, but feel I COULD be.
