Yes, the better qualities, often with matte finish, are made by Chacom. For example the Rattray's Harpoon or Rannoch.

I would encourage you to look at the world of Italian pipes, and by that, I don't mean Savenilli. Take a hard look at Radice, Il Ceppe, Gepetto, or Ser Jacopo to name a few. Quality pipes for well under $200. The oil cured Radice Rind is a dream smoke. Our sponsor, Al Pascia, offers many such values.

I certainly agree, especially about Radice. They have long been the sleeper in Italian pipes, with quality and craftsmanship which ranks with Castello at half the price. I have many and always review new offerings even though I do not need another pipe. Ser Jacopo also very, very good albeit at a slightly higher price than Radice. At the same time, I have found Chacom to make a good quality pipe. I have a Chacom Fleur pipe (a bit over $200) which is well made and a good smoker.

Chacom is in an important sense the original briar pipe.
Sure, we can wrangle over the problem of continuity through time -- Theseus's Ship -- but by real-world institutional standards, Chacom is the living and continuous extension of Francois Comoy and his grandson's partnership with his cousins the Chapuis.

I've heard more complaints about Dunhills than about Chacoms -- literally.
My meer-lined lovat is one of my favorites.

I have a few Chacom pipes and think they are good value at their price level, especially their estate pipes. Chacom briar seems to go through a solid selection and aging process to provide a smooth and consistent tobacco burn, and in the last few years their pipe selection and design has improved. I prefer a Chacom-branded pipe over a Rattray’s, generally speaking, although as noted above, they are very similar and this is just one of those personal preferences. I’ve never owned a Vauen.

But at that same general pricing level, for European factory pipes, I would lean towards a Radice or the always reliable Savinelli. Volkan (Paronelli) pipes are also underrated in this category. Peterson has come out with a few interesting designs recently, but I just don’t reach for them very often for some reason.

The next step up for me in European factory/hand made pipes would be Ser Jacopo and Claudio Cavicchi (which I smoke often), and then, of course, the White Spot (Dunhill) and Castello.
