Decided to take a Magic Eraser to the stem of my 30 year-old Peterson Deerstalker since it was starting to look a little cloudy. Of course, then it was too dull-looking. So tried wiping on a smidge of Canola oil which was what I had handy in the house. Damn if that didn't give it a great glossy new look.

A vegie oil runs the risk of going rancid - since such a small amount is used not sure if that would be a factor.

Mineral oil is rather good.
What I find even better is mineral oil with a bit of carnauba wax mixed together which makes a very good polish. [Just mix together under a low heat]

I think that wax will last somewhat longer than oil...I've got a small bar of beeswax (somewhat easier to apply than carnauba) and with a cotton cloth, rub it in. The small bit of cotton cloth I've been using for some time is so impregnated with wax, I don't even need the bar.

Chapstick with a sunscreen works well, too.
