(Note- even me, sometimes spares a pipe from the vandalism of my clean ups. This one deserves preservation)

If only cost $50 on eBay. My eye was drawn towards the reddish oxblood glow of the raised panels.

All it has signed is CANNES on the shank, and not one other mark anywhere except the 300O price sticker inside.

I figured it was a modern French tourist pipe from Cannes, France.

300 new Francs was $60 , from 1960-1999.

But lookie here:

What if—

It’s from 1944?

It is NOT a tourist trinket.

It was totally hand made.

What did I score on eBay?

The first week of 1980 gasoline had doubled from fifty some cents to over a dollar and I went with my mother to Bolivar and bought a flat out perfect 1974 Matador X 360 Coupe for $700 and I still have the cancelled check someplace. Two old maid schoolteachers bought it new in 1974 and it had less than 30,000 miles and still smelled new,,,but not for long.:)

Sing one Charlie Daniels!

My mother had told me she’d sell the farms and give me all the money if I went to law school instead of joining the US Army Air Cavalry, but I most remember Old Gladys Roberts of Roberts Chevrolet going over to my mother with Young Billy Roberts and telling her she had a grand daughter starting John’s Hopkins Medical School that was home over break.

And I after I bought the Matador, with my money, Mama asked me if wanted to check out that Roberts girl or go see Libby, and I said girls can wait, I want to go show off this thing to my buddies!

I’d about decided to not wreck this car and go on to law school, you know?

When the Allied armies liberated Cannes, what would 300 francs buy?

My Cannes does not have one drop of varnish.

And just slightly rubbing it against my face raises the oxblood in the raised and polished design carving.

There are some things money can't buy, priceless!

The price of a 300 French franc Cannes pipe in 1944 was paid for by an invasion.

Everyone could remember this day of August 24, 1944, like the grandmother telling that at the announcement of the arrival of American tanks which would liberate the city, the entire population was jubilant, and all had left the French flag flourished at windows, and those who had not, made up one in haste with pieces ...

Those Nazi invaders loved the South of France so much they left the shops and the towns all open and I wonder how much 300 Reich marks was in Cannes of August 1944?

Axis Sally

But when I got my like new Matador X in 1980 for less than my first semester in law school cost in 80/81 even then I thought it was a helluva good bargain!

Young men think they’ll live forever and never get old, you know?

That is a peculiar price tag insert,

It’s perforated and the numbers aren’t all the same font.

It could have been priced in German money, but who can say?

That price insert looks like it's handwritten to me.
