The quintessential standard Calabash pipe. Gourd body and meerschaum bowl a beautiful thing to behold and ruminate whilst smoking it.
Here is a fine example of one I own made by Kaywoodie.
Never one to not believe there are those willing to see things in a different light to bring forth an old standard in a new format, this briar body ( what would be a gourd ) is rusticated and stained, the bowl is Vergin briar capped with Masur Birch ( normally meerschaum ) made by Maigurs Knets.
Like the makers who think out of the box I also look for unusual representations of what we'd expect with some serious twists. If ever there has been a maker who pushes the envelope it is Trevor Talbert. The material used for the body is blasted Meerschaum, the bowl is Morta and it is capped with Masur Birch and an accent of same meets the stem at the end of the bowl.
Figuring a maker pushing the envelope further was not going to happen for awhile I next found a pipe which two masters of their craft, Davorin Denovic who is a master working with Morta, and Altinook a master with Meerschaum created a masterpiece. What these two masters produced is beyond just beautiful.
So here I am a very fortunate individual who owns, and smokes these lovely creations thinking I have the all the fellow countrymen Mimmo Provenzo proves me wrong. Whilst surfing today I came across a Calabash by Mimmo that took my breath away, the body is made of Olivewood, the bowls ( there are 2 ) are made of briar, one is capped with Morta the other with smooth Vergin briar, I am a very lucky to add this to the fold,
