Business Insider produced an interesting video a few days ago on mining meerschaum and producing pipes in Turkey and tries to explain why the pipes are so expensive. After watching this video, I'd actually make the argument that most of these pipes are relatively inexpensive compared to the level of effort that goes into producing a quality meer. I used to spend hours watching videos on meerschaum pipe making. It's really a fascinating process. Thanks to @weezell meers are almost the only pipes I smoke now.
