Title rephrased and removed all caps.- jpm

Back in '03 I purchased 4 ounce tins of Hale o the Wynd and some others. The tins are now (19 years later) bulging quite a bit, which is good. But I'm concerned they may blow which would be bad, because they sit in a cellar and I don't check on them often. Anyone had one of these tins blow?

May have to jar some of this old stuff...

Thank you.

I’ve got a few Black Mallory that are pushing 30 years. No issues. And I’m not considering transferring them.

Yes. I've had one from 1996 that opened along the scoring around the top for the pull top.

Ive never heard of a tin popping on its own. But when you do open it, do it slowly.

I've had a few go off. Sounded like firecrackers in my closet.

I have some tins (both the Rattray's kind, the C&D short round ones, and the little rectangular ones dating between 2005-08. Nary a problem with any of them. I sold quite a few via Pipestud from that same time period recently, and all passed inspection. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you choose to smoke one, just pick the one that looks most ready to blow! ;)

I've had all sorts of Rattray's cutter top tins from the 50s and 60s and I have never had an exploding one - granted they all went to a dear friend on here who smokes this stuff so I doubt they hung around long enough to bulge! I've had a few of the ring pull tins go off but I put that down to unusual heat pattens and they have always split where ring pull scoring shows on the lid. I wish they would reintroduce cutter top tins since they seem to be brilliant at preserving tobacco.

Sorry if wrong thread for this question:
Like cigars, is there a minimum humidity for storing sealed tins?
Not really remember pipe tins are metal you don’t want want them to rust. I keep mine in a old dresser as it keeps them cool and and dry.

Seems some experienced members of this forum have had unexpected and unwanted detonations of aged tins. Many tins do not contort so visibly, as most of you know. My oldest tins are from the 70's, and they seem ok.

Discretion is the better part of valor, and I may jar some of these little bulging monsters to protect the contents. Thank you.
