Somewhere there is a video of Mogen Johansen of Johs pipes carving stummels on a wheel. He's famous for turning out product. Making it look that (relatively) easy is a hazard to the public. Don't try this at home.

Reminds me of watching Nimmo or others cut ebauchons on a 20"+ sawwheel with not one safety item used. I'd be called "Stumpy".

Looks like he buffed the stummel? The sandblast is flat now. I buff the stem off the pipe but you have to be very careful not to round any edges.

I mostly use no wax or other cleaners or polishes on my pipes thinking about the residue they could leave. Mostly, I think I value the natural wear improved by a good hand buffing. It's my version of purism and not for everyone, or maybe most.

I leave comments like that while thinking the positive part in my head without posting it. I think it’s great he got the pipe back in service and is smoking it!!
