Well .. that's one way of making sure you manage to finish all your cellar before the wife gets wind of it and makes you sell your baccy at the price you told her you bought it

Decent looking soil, at least you're not digging in clay.

It appears to be undisturbed. Lots of small rocks. And roots.
Ok for the excavator, not fun with a shovel.
In all seriousness, clay pipes (those kind) are a pain. My old house’s septic system was all clay going to the tank. It all got crushed and/or disintegrated over time. Sewage nightmare. Hope the replacement goes easily for ya! ?
We keep looking (as Simon infers, our house was part of the German-American Bund, the Nazi front organization, before WWII), but all we’ve found so far are some bits of German-language newspapers.
Same here. Clay pipe, all infiltrated, into the house, under the basement floor to a cast iron stack. I replaced it all with sch 40 PVC some years back. This pipe comes from under the remains of the original house on the property. Someone broke it (dug up a section while running a mystery pipe across it), and it was flooding the backyard every spring.
