Briar Barnes Pipes

Is any of you Old Bitwood lovers familiar with this family :

S. R. Barnes, senior and his sons with some of their Briar Pipes - 1940s

The factory moved to The Chestnuts, 401 Great North Road, Eaton Ford in the 1940s.

Very interesting! Never hoid of 'em. I wonder if there was any family connection to Kennedy Barnes, who was the general manger of Charatan.

Definitely interesting picture but I've never heard of him or his family. I wonder who the American officers in picture are/were??

More likely clients or visiting airmen from a nearby air base. Loads of airbase’s in east anglia, especially during the 40’s.

A quick search shows the US airmen were based at RAF Little Staughton, near St. Neots in Cambridgeshire. Barnes was in St. Neots.

They must have made a good impression of themselves……they were given ‘freedom of the city’ a few years ago.

According to the British tabloids, Prince Harry can fly a helicopter……on his own! I don’t believe everything the newspapers say Orlando, neither should you! Lol

They could be his sons I suppose, if Mr. Barnes was an American & settled in St. Neots, late in life. I don’t know. Pretty sure he was British?

Can you compare them to a brand we are more familair with ?

Would much like to know more about this brand I never heard of.
Always nice to discover a "new" typical English pipe maker.
Like "Maurice" , by some compared to Dunhill with respect to quality. Bombed out during the blitz and disappeared into oblivion.
The picture somehow brings Invicta to my blurred mind..

Looks sweet and the packaging is very agreeable too. Those were the days .
