Traditionally, these are related; intertwined, so to speak. They would vary the recipe to offset the differences in the crop's flavors.
Still not on point, because the recipe is being varied to maintain consistency, which is more of an adjustment than a variation.

I'm not sure I'm following this. I thought the idea was about consistency or if that was that even possible. Blending, adding castings and altering the formula are all ways tobacco companies try to achieve an acceptable level of consistency. One could say crop variations result in adjustments (of one kind or another) to achieve consistency. The two are indeed intertwined. Nature is inconsistent, adjustment allows the blender to achieve consistency in spite of what nature produced. I see one as the logical consequence of the other.

The original point was the value of maintaining consistency of the end result. Compensating for changes in ingredients serves that, not against it.
