3 months ago one of my pipes had some area discoloring. Pipe is Captain Black t803 (made by BBB specially for Captain Black). The pics below show the spots wehre color changed. I actually don't know what might be the reason of such discoloring, is it realted to temperature or pipe finish? I have to mention here that it happened to another pipe also (Peterson's Sherlock Holmes - Baker Street).
So what is your analysis to this problem? did I do anything wrong?

Almost looks like that had some sort of a clear coat finish at one time and the rest of it wore off or was poorly removed. I can remember 2 pipes that I had where some sort of clear finish bubbled and peeled off. One was A Bjarne Viking which I still have and the other was a Charatan's Make bulldog that I no longer have. Both came from Vegas smokes which I find a little suspicious. Both had the same problem. After one smoke a clear finish seemed to get too hot and bubble and peel. I sanded them both down and they became good smokers, but that pipe you are showing there looks sort of like what mine looked like in mid removal.

yes it does look like the remnants of some kind of laquer
i would second the above post; if you want to get this pipe back to normal then sand down (i would use micromesh for this or Tripoli polish) then buff with carnauba...in fact, even just a buff with carnauba (or with Paragon wax if you dont have a buffing wheel) might help to ameliorate this problem, although i still prefer the sanding down method

Thanks Phill and Scotrob, Actually I don't have buffing wheel, I have carnauba and may go to elbow grease. Regardign to sanding, what grit size should I begin with?

I have a savinelli that did that. It appearstoo just need some polishing. Ive definitely heard about the finish they were talking about, though, but I don't think it's too common. If the finish didn't bubble an peel, just polish with a little extra elbow grease and it should be back to normal.

If you want to keep the color pretty much as it is start with 6000 Micro-Mesh,if that doesn't do it you can go back to 4000 and work up.

If you are using sandpaper I'd start with 800--1000,finish with 1200 or higher since you don't have a buffer.

you can get a special mixture of carnuba wax to use without a buffer from Walker Briar Works. I don't know how much this will help you with bubbling though.
