Hi,
I recieved two new Irish Seconds today. The first thing I did was was the bowl and stem basically to remove the Peterson bowl coating. That was easily accomplished but on one bowl they got sloppy with the stain. My Question is should I also dand it off or does it make a difference?

I dont think Id worry too much if its just up around the edges. You probably have to take off more wood than you want to remove stain.

I don't know if I should try alcohol or sandpaper. I usually remove the bowl coating from Petetson pipes because of taste. I use honey after removing the factory stuff.

That'd be my choice, a light sanding and building some cake.

To quicken cake build, wet the chamber, fill with sugar. Pour out and let dry. Carefully load some tobacco, and smoke. Rinse and repeat.

I've sanded stain out of bowls at it bothers me for whatever reason (perceived off flavors) and I generally start at 120 grit. From a perspective of building cake, super smooth isn't necessarily better.

That is probably more the reason than the sloppy stain. Regardless they are good deals and its a nice pipe. I look at the seconds on occasion but none have grabed me yet. I think I will eyeball them now!

I have three Irish Seconds now. A Dracula 306, Calabash 05 and a bent apple 303 I thinkand is my first P Lip. Would have never seen the sloppy stain if I didn't remove the bowl coating.
