So I just started smoking a pipe and I'm wondering is it possible to smoke a pipe or is there always some black ash left?? I'm always ending up with a grainy black ash sometimes a little white. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. can someone help .

There will always be ash in the bowl, not every little bit of the tobacco combusts.

Not doing anything wrong. There will always be ash, and some dottle (unburnt leaves). I suspect that you may be finding a little of both. I don't worry about it. Just smoke away and enjoy.

Some tobaccos leave dark ash, some white and some a mixture of both. I would say with the black ash that you are smoking some type of aromatic blend.
