Orific bits were the standard during the 19th century and lasted until the late 1920's. Slots began to be used around the turn of century. My earliest slot dates to 1907.
@sablebrush52 is correct in saying that orific and slotted bits coexisted for at least a couple of decades, just as Neaderthals and Cro-Magnons once did.

I have a 1903 GBD diamond shanked billiard with a slotted button image.jpgimage.jpg

That's interesting. My 1883 Barling Magnum has a combo similar to this, but in the case of that pipe, I'm fairly confident that the slot was added later and that it was originally an orific bit.
How is the stem attached to the shank? Does it screw into place or does it use a friction tenon?

The 1901 Loewe Bulldog has a friction tenon
The 1903 GBD bent billiard has a screw bone tenon

Also interesting. That 1901 Loewe is a very early example of a friction tenon. Bone screw-in tenons disappeared pretty quickly but were still in use until the early '20's. People tend to think that technology changes or advances in discreet separate ways, and reality is quite different.

Jesse told me this a so called semi orific bit . It is my 1903 Barling bulldog ( see previous post ) .
Odd, not ? Never seen one before, it is very comfortable. I prefer the good old orific bits , also because of their aesthetics. And the easy cleaning :)
I'm not a clencher though.
