I guess Navy Flake means VA and Latakia, correct? Does it always? Love SG Navy Flake. Also picked up some Bothy Flake. I haven't tried yet. Any other recommendations?

I think navy flake is principally a marketing term, to associate the product with maritime endeavors. As such, it must have rum in it as a matter of naval tradition. (I'm not sure how sodomy and the lash--the other two traditions of the British navy, according to Winston Churchill--fit in). SG's version seems unique in having latakia in it.

The MB Plumbcake does look good. I think that's on my list now. Bothy Flake is flavored with Whisky.

Navy Flakes are Virginia, Burley or Virginia/Perique. Never heard of one with latakia.

Pressed tobacco, became known as "Navy" "because of the convenience for sailors and outdoorsmen who favored its compact size "and long-lasting, slow-burning qualities. Very few Navy Flakes have rum.

Plumcake isn't a flake. It and The Solent Mixture are very good though.

My understanding of a Navy tobacco is pretty much what ‘embers said. One that is either pressed into plugs, or in the old days, constricted down with rope, to make a dense compact chunk of tobacco that can be chewed or smoked, and in the old days, didn’t take up a lot of space in a sailor’s gear. Component leaf generally always including Virginia, with Perique being the most common condiment. Sometimes a rum topping is applied, but not always.

These definitions are loose, like they are with most of these “genre” definitions, and subject to the fancy of whoever does the marketing, which irks my borderline OCD nature.
