My whole point, was that in reading what the tobacconists write, how the industry labels them, and interviews of our radio show here, what we sense when we smoke them is not the same as how the industry labels them. PS LTF has a lot of aromatic qualities, but it's officially a non-aro Virginia Cavendish.

Like I said, these are all not my ideas, but just regurgitations.
If someone likes Amphora, smoke 'em. No one is going to make fun of you. Well... unless you look funny doing it, ha ah?

At its base, "aromatic" refers to how the tobacco smells, right?
Since, as Russ says, toppings are smelled and not so much tasted, I guess it would make sense that things that are topped would be "aromatics."
Ok, you win. ;)

most (not all) tobaccos are cased. But not all are topped
This is how I understand it.
A casing can be as little as distilled water, or honey as a binder for pressing a flake. Manufacturers adding a antifungal would technically be applying a casing.

I have always thought that they need to expand the descriptors, or find a better way of defining them.

I don't consider University Flake an aromatic, I can still taste the tobacco underneath.

And therein lies the misunderstanding. An Aromatic does not need to mask the tobacco flavor to be an Aromatic.
University Flake is by all definitions an Aromatic. There is a topping added to the tobacco after it is processed.

No it is not an aromatic by all definitions. I gave a definition above where it is not an aromatic, no?
I don't consider Erinmore or Haddo's Delight to be aromatics either, but by at least one definition, they are.
Let's agree to disagree.

@sallow - Sorry, maybe semantics... but peoples "opinions" of what a blend are do not a definition make. Just my opinion... or definition... errr, nevermind.
Agree to disagree works though. Not really that big of a deal.

Like I said in my first post... there's how we each define aromatics for ourselves, and then there's the way the blenders and tobacco makers define it, "the industry."

If I go by my own personal definition, which has a bias against aromatic on principle, then it would probably look a lot like Jim's or your definitions.

Someone who loves aromatics proudly would probably include Haddos and UF, because they like... um... nevermind, an aromatic guy probably wouldn't like those anyways. :puffy:

Woah woah woah.. I don't want anyone to think I smoke aromatics....
I just have always considered Haddo's one.

I smoke some Aromatics... not ashamed. Granted, they get doctored up with some heavy duty Burley, but still an aro.
