Cool, you should also tell us how long it took them to respond to the initial request, and how long it took them to get to your order and fill it. These are things that interest me. I've had some take way too long to get back to me, and some fired back a pipe in weeks. I know that some pipemakers are just inundated with orders, and I think that is important to take into consideration also.

Yeah, it really depends. Most of the carvers I've worked with are pretty immediately responsive. As you said, production time really depends on their current order list or workload. I've had commissions run from 5 days all the way to 8 months. What is important to me is that the timeline they quote at the beginning matches reality. I would be more disappointed to get a pipe in 2 months that I was told would be done in 2 weeks than I would to get a pipe in 6 months I was told was going to be 7 months.
Of course, sometimes Force Majeure disrupts things as well, and if specific materials need to be ordered it can slow things down too.
If I had to put a number on it, unless you are ordering from someone in extraordinarily high demand, the average comission is usually acknowledged immediately and completed within a couple months.

Well of course some will take longer than others because of popularity, but as you said, did they stick to their quote on time. That kind of stuff. There is one pipe maker infamous for just not responding and for taking way longer than expected. I love his work, but I won't order from him because I will forget after a year that I even placed the order.

I have JT Cooke doing commissions now and he said 12 months which is realistic taking into account his technique and demand, of course others will vary but patience is key as you know.
