I want to get an Army Mount, but I'm confused. Isn't an Army Mount a stem without a tenon so you can break down the pipe while it is still hot? I see where Peterson has such a stem but some others like the Savinelli Gauis have a tenon as do other makers. Wouldn't the tenon on the Sav Gauis break off over time if the stem is always removed when the pipe is hot? I guess my question is what is a true Army Mount?

ray47 the Gaius, while a most wonderfully smoking pipe, is indeed a "faux" army mount. It has the look of one but care must be taken when removing the stem just as do most other pipes. Doesn't bother me a bit. Its smoking qualities greatly outweigh this cosmetic wrinkle. In fact all of the pipes in the Sav 320 line are worthy choices.

A true Military mount was made to protect both the shank and the bit from breakage. The shank by reinforcing it with metal and the bit by not reducing its diameter hence leaving the full thickness where it fits into the mortis. The bits are often slightly tapered getting snugger as the it is inserted. According to George Dibos it's a more difficult bit to make correctly. I suspect the current crop of "faux" military mounts are attempting to capture the look without the added expense. Unless you're in the trenches with need to disassemble your pipe in a hurry even when warm, it probably isn't important that it meet the original objectives.

Does anyone know if Peterson is still making the Army/Irish Made Army in the 106 shape? I can't find it anywhere.
