It's probably based on each person's economic situation. That said, with tobacco under constant attack via tax increases, it's never cheaper than it is now. Future availability is also another serious risk given potential legislation at both the state and federal level. My cellar is woefully under-stocked given these pressures.

Probably somewhere around 90% of us are maniacal tobacco purchasers, myself included. The difference between somebody with 5 pounds of 'baccy in the cellar and someone with 200+ pounds is generally more of a difference of economic means than a difference in philosophy.

+1, Spot on.

I do not. Tobacco use doesn't define me nor does it determine my quality of life. It's nice but, life won't become unbearable should it suddenly be unattainable tomorrow.

Tobacco use doesn't define me or determine my quality of life either, but right now it's cheap and available, and since I like it enough to post on a forum about it on a regular basis, I think it makes sense to stock up while the gettins good.

I used to collect quite a bit of tobacco. 20 years ago I took the time to learn about the smaller brands and relationships in the industry and I got a sense of who was more or less expert in creating unique blends...and I collected some of them. The smaller businesses tied to families rather than corporations were my primary focus. I now have a cellar that's quite a bit more than I need, and have found that while nearly all the tins I have are very good blends, there are only a fraction that tend to reach for. And some are not the "boutique" brands.

The rest...probably hundreds of tins...sit waiting to be gifted or sold someday. I sealed all the rectangular and round tins in food-saver bags; maybe overkill, but some of these tins are literally worth quite a bit and it's best to protect them. Unfortunately, selling or trading is a time consuming nuisance (to me) unless one has a local band of pipe-smokers around or takes the time to go to shows. Not many pipe smokers in my neck of the woods, and I no longer go to the shows. I have sold some through Pipestud - who is a swell guy to work with.

All that said, I do recommend cellaring because I've seen good blends go away. McClelland and Chief Catoonah (who used many McClelland tobaccos I believe) are examples, and we can also see that Smokers Haven blends like Krumble Kake are not guaranteed to be seen again. My suggestion would be to focus (at least a bit) on remaining boutique brands. Near me these may be Ernie Q at Watch City....(Rythm and Blues is exceptional to me) and if he wins the lottery and stops making it...it's gone. Peretti still blends in-house and has many fans (although historically some say the staff has been a mixed bag in terms of being polite). I am sure that there are more - but I'm set and likely won't add more than a few tins here and there.

Building a cellar, to me, would denote a plan, tracking, orderly storage, and some kind of design about when things got smoked. I have accumulated what I think of as a stash. This is under a wooden pipe rack, on top of a pipe cabinet, and around a bookcase, but does not constitute a cellar in any real sense, so my answer to the question is no, not what I would call a cellar or cellaring. I do tend to buy a little more than I smoke, and I smoke at a glacial pace.

I wouldn't call my "accumulation of tobacco" a cellar, but an accumulation... I keep trying new and different tobaccos, and jar them up. The ones I really like get ordered again in low quantity, to fill out an order for the new stuff I have not tried. You know, the old "if you liked xxx, you should really try xyz". All of a sudden, I have storage issues! I don't smoke more than a bowl or so a day, and not every day, so this will last me a while...which is nice...:)

Not I. More because of finances than anything. I simply don't have that much to spend on tobacco. Fortunately, like at least one other here, Tobacco isn't a need for me. Rather something I enjoy, much like a glass of single malt or brandy, (which I cannot have anymore). Were I to come into money, I would definitely cellar those blends I know I like in decent quantities.

I don't cellar, but if I had more disposable income I don't know how much more I'd really spend on tobacco. I have a little stash that should last me a year or two (not even a bowl a day), and if I had to stop, I know I just wouldn't be that heartbroken about it. Maybe I just haven't tried the right tobacco :ROFLMAO:

I don't have an actual cellar, as I'm sure most of us here don't. That being said I don't actually "cellar" tobacco either.

What I do is buy one or two tins of MANY different tobaccos that I am curious to try, so I end up with a bunch of jars and tins that will inevitably gain some age as they await their demise.

So it's not intentional, but rather a side effect of me wanting to try various blends. I always envision myself narrowing it down to just a couple VAs, a couple VaPers, and a couple English blends, but lately I wonder if that'll ever actually happen
