Starting to Get Obsessed

I took up pipe smoking in earnest back in 2012. For years I would buy 1 tin of tobacco and smoke it until it was gone before buying the next. During that time I only had one pipe. Now I have a collection of tobaccos I run through so I have 2 pipes, 1 for VAs, and one for Latikia blends. It seems like most on here have large collections of pipes they use. Does anyone else just use a few? I feel like I might be doing something wrong?
(Edited title, please see rule number 9.

Thank you, Robert.)

If you're enjoying the experience who are we to say you're doing something wrong. My dad had one pipe that he smoked everyday for years on end.....for some people it works great.

It is said that every pipe smoker should have 7 pipes, one for each day of the week. This allows your pipes to rest properly. I personally think 50 pipes is a good number to own. There are guys with hundreds of pipes, they are pretty much addicted to buying pipes. If they go one day without buying they go into withdrawl.

I think Peck only smokes two pipes as well.
Seriously though my brother would smoke a corn cob until it fell apart and smoke only one tobacco. Nat Sherman's 509.
I agree with Harris it's nice to have a pipe per day of the week. If I had Peck money I'd have several 7 day sets of Rad Davis pipes.

My goal is to get down to 2 or 3 pipes. I have to force myself to smoke any more than that but I'm an infrequent smoker, comparatively. If I had to do it over again I would probably start with a quality mid size meer and call it a day. There are some blends that fall apart without the flavor contribution of briar, but it's a diva as far as pipe materials go. I'm interested to see what morta will do and will find out as soon as my pipe clears customs.
BTW F U customs.

I have a dozen or so pipes, but I only smoke 3 regularly. I have my two "truck pipes" that I smoke at work. One one day and one the next. I have one "home pipe" that I smoke before bed. I smoke it daily, but only one bowl at night, so it gets 20 or so hours rest between bowls.
I don't really want a lot of pipes, but I bought a lot while learning what I do like. Now that I know that I like Savinellis with a largish bowl that stand up by themselves, I don't plan on buying anything else. Not that I think other pipes would be bad, just that I don't KNOW that they'll be good, and I wasted a lot of money on pipes that "look good."
I just bought two more Savinelli Standing pipes today, so when they come in, if they are as good as my other three, I'll be able to rotate five pipes.
I bought a Savinelli St. Nicholas this year. I might buy one every year. I might not.

I am & always have been a heavy pipe smoker, 50g lasts me 2 days tops. For 15-20 years I went along quite happily with 3 or 4 pipes. There was only one tobacconist in my home town,if I had bought any more the owner might have started to look upon me as if I had a problem, or more money than sense! Then some evil young man invented the Internet & hey presto! I have 50 or so of the frigging things. Do I enjoy pipesmoking more than before? Absolutely not, I only think I do because there's the worlds choice for me at the click of a button. I & you gentleman should know better at our age, but as our wives & girlfriends keeping telling us (or me at least) I should, but I don't because it's fun, I enjoy it. Besides, without the Internet pipesmokers would struggle, here in England anyway as nearly all the tobacconists have shut up shop. So as long you can afford it, no problem. Keep buying pipes, & more to the point keep smoking them, often!

I think two pipes can be just fine, I think 200 pipes can also be just fine. I have 10 Briars at the moment and I will stop at 12. 12 really fine smoking pipes. I don't smoke everyday and I think a pipe should be smoked with some regularity or it should be sold or traded for one that will.
I am a musician and at one point I had 16 guitars, 4 basses, a banjo and a mandolin. I just wasn't playing them all enough to justify them. I am now down to 4 guitars, 2 basses, a banjo and a mandolin....although I am casually looking for a fretless banjo.

I have 6. 1 MM Maplewood for aro's, I find the wood to be sweet, even after I broke it in. 1 CG for everything. 1 small parker Zulu as i walking around London pipe. 1 falcon with a wide short bowl for orientals/Turkish you know the score. 1 Dublin Butz C, for Virginia's. And last but not least a medium sized Parker acorn for when I'm reading around the house or just relaxing and I need to clench, it has a wide oval stem and bit. Anything bowl. I think that's it for me.

I have 13 decent to very nice briars, but only two get smoked often, and one of these every single day for years. I also have some cobs for the car and travel, but those are almost disposable.

I can't give a testimony. I have accumulated north of 80 pipes. But in tribute to my dad, I will mention that he smoked a pipe, with a year off now and then for cigars, from age 15 to 60, when he quit cold turkey. He died at 89 licensed to drive without glasses. He was a child of the Depression and only owned one tobacco pipe at a time, with maybe a slightly functional burn-out or two as back-ups until he could get back to a newsstand and buy another. He smoked only Granger. So, yes, one pipe will do just fine. He also packed for a two-week vacation in a valise that you might carry to and from a job. It was just his ethic that too much stuff was a bad thing.

I have about 50 pipes, but of those there is a rotation of about 8-10 that see regular action. Out of that 8 or so... I will grab a pipe, smoke it for a couple days, maybe a week if it strikes my fancy, then put it in the rack and move on to another.
I could survive with 2 or 3 pipes for sure... but that would just be boring.

MSO,
I think I would have liked your dad. I have a tendency toward pack-rat-ism, and I really try to fight it. I don't want a lot of stuff, or maybe I don't want to WANT a lot of stuff, but it does seem to accumulate.

"I only ever smoke one or two at a time. It gets confusing if I try to smoke more."
+1

Besides, 2 pipes at one time is what really gives me tongue burn
Bpftc, If it works for you that is fine. One of the things about this blog is the many ideas you become exposed to by other pipers.
Cigrmaster has explained the primary reason many of us moved on beyond several pipes. It really is your own experience that counts on most of this journey.
Harris is wrong about having more than 50 pipes indicating you may have an addiction known here abouts as PAD.

Bpftc, I would really like to to discuss his error on this subject more but I just had a massive urge to go buy another pipe.

Haha, my wife was watching over my shoulder a few months or weeks back when I was commenting on another thread that the only things that I collected other than pipes was ceramics. She pointed out that I had over three hundred hammers.

"But, but, each of those hammers has a different and special purpose..." like pipes I guess.
Who needs a reason? Just get out there and buy up all the pipes you need. Then when you get all that you need, buy up the ones you want. Then when you have all that you want, buy them to keep someone else from having it. ha ha.
