I think food and alcohol intake and calorie burn-off are prime culprits, though the sedentary aspect of pipe smoking might affect the burn-off of calories. Pipe smoking alone? Not likely, I don't think.

maybe it's the coffee with milk that i've been drinking while smoking. i drink 6-7 mugs a day to go with my smoking

beverages are the devil's hiding place as far as calories ? counting calories helps though -if anything, i think the pipe can satisfy my sweet tooth pretty well most of the time

Actually, I have noticed just the opposite. I've lost weight from smoking. Smoking a pipe tends to give me a full feeling.
