A couple months ago while making some deliveries, I dropped off an order at a local hobby shop and this place was bustling! Full of people playing various tabletop RPG type games. I was fascinated by it, and have been curious ever since. The pandemic shutdowns have got me thinking about trying new things and getting out more.

Anyone play any of these types of games? Have any recommendations for a n00b where the barriers to entry (i.e. complicated rules, cost of supplies) aren't too high. I was struck by just how many types of games there were. It wasn't all just sword and sorcery stuff, not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm mainly thinking about RPG and card-based games but I also have an interest in board games like Carcasonne, Ticket to Ride, etc. as well.

Your dice acquisition disorder has begun. Look into Crystal Caste for some stone dice as well as rare ones. Otherwise, just find a type that you like (D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Shadowrun, etc.) And do a little research before jumping in. You can also watch games played on YouTube of all of the above.

As with lots of geeky pursuits, listening rather than speaking a lot for the first couple sessions is recommended.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about tabletop RPGs and I'll try to direct you to the best resources I know.

A quick, easy fun one is The Awful Green Things From Outer Space. An hour or so per game, plays a bit different each time. Good with kids too. Not the deepest game but fun.

Plenty of YouTube videos to give you an idea if it’s something you’d like.

Hmmmm, looks like the game has gotten hard to find. Copies going for close to $100. Bummer.

Never good at RPG's. Just not wired that way. But my kids play MTG and have roped me in during this pandemic. I tried playing back when it was released and have, apparently a butt ton of rare cards that they like to borrow for their games. We play a lot of cribbage, poker, and other board games.

Been playing tabletop RPG's for a little over 30 years. There are a lot to choose from. The first thing you will need to do is meet a group first. Find some players that need an extra person. Do this before you buy anything, trust me. I personally favor GURPS: Generic Universal Role Playing System. The group I was in before covid used GURPS and we would play anything from cyberpunk to medieval fantasy. You need to find you play style first, before you buy anything.

I have been playing - and running - table top RPGs since 1979. The group I play with is SF/Horror oriented, with the exceptions of the times when I go off and run a historical game. We currently play using Zoom and Discord.

I concur heartily with everything Capt Morgan said, down to the use of GURPS, which is a favorite system of mine. Don't spend money before you find a group, and start getting a handle on the hobby. It is not something that you pick up on your own.

There is also Fantasy Grounds, it is an extremely well built online tabletop.
