Anyone Into Tabletop/Card RPGs or Board Games?

A couple months ago while making some deliveries, I dropped off an order at a local hobby shop and this place was bustling! Full of people playing various tabletop RPG type games. I was fascinated by it, and have been curious ever since. The pandemic shutdowns have got me thinking about trying new things and getting out more.

Anyone play any of these types of games? Have any recommendations for a n00b where the barriers to entry (i.e. complicated rules, cost of supplies) aren't too high. I was struck by just how many types of games there were. It wasn't all just sword and sorcery stuff, not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm mainly thinking about RPG and card-based games but I also have an interest in board games like Carcasonne, Ticket to Ride, etc. as well.

I did a game of D&D years ago.. It was a little strange. The people who invited me were nice and they smoked me out with good weed.. that just isn't for me though.

World of Warcraft, on the other hand was my thing. I played that for years.. I just wouldn't have the time these days.

Your dice acquisition disorder has begun. Look into Crystal Caste for some stone dice as well as rare ones. Otherwise, just find a type that you like (D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Shadowrun, etc.) And do a little research before jumping in. You can also watch games played on YouTube of all of the above.

As with lots of geeky pursuits, listening rather than speaking a lot for the first couple sessions is recommended.

A quick, easy fun one is The Awful Green Things From Outer Space. An hour or so per game, plays a bit different each time. Good with kids too. Not the deepest game but fun.

Plenty of YouTube videos to give you an idea if it’s something you’d like.

AD&D from way back when. My older kid just got into it and has his friends playing with him over zoom in his school. If you have a good DM, it's pretty fun.

A fan of card games, but all with standard decks. Favorite two handed game is Spite and Malice, followed by Gin Rummy.

I'm not a RPG player, but am definitely and big card and board game player. I also have a growing number of player tester credits for board games.

Never good at RPG's. Just not wired that way. But my kids play MTG and have roped me in during this pandemic. I tried playing back when it was released and have, apparently a butt ton of rare cards that they like to borrow for their games. We play a lot of cribbage, poker, and other board games.

Do this before you buy anything, trust me. I personally favor GURPS: Generic Universal Role Playing System. The group I was in before covid used GURPS and we would play anything from cyberpunk to medieval fantasy. You need to find you play style first, before you buy anything.

There is also Fantasy Grounds, it is an extremely well built online tabletop.

I'm an Advanced Dungeon & Dragons Dungeonmaster from way back. Played all through high school, the military and college. I have boxes of stuff from the 70's and 80's still in storage, some of it worth some money.

Many years ago my wife and I would play Backgammon and Yahtzee while we watched TV. This was before we had cable/dish and only had like 6 channels.
