I haven’t had a problem I do it with the stem in place just wave the heat gun around so it doesn’t get too hot. Doesn’t take a ton of heat to get the wax to run off.
I’d probably dunk with the stem on otherwise I’d be worried you might get a buildup of wax and have poor stem fit?
That’s not a bad idea. I could use the stem as a handle and I wouldn’t have to rig up something to block the mortise off.

I like the shape and size, looks awesome! This may be looked down upon, but I put a Meer in a ziplock and clenched it around the stem and shotgunned smoke into the bag from a second pipe several times. It colored pretty quickly and looks way more seasoned than it is.

Thanks. That’s an interesting way to jump start the color. Waiting on it to dry out still. It’s starting to turn back to the opaque chalky white, but it’s not quite there yet.

The stummel finally dried out, and the stearin arrived in the mail today, so I went ahead and waxed it.

I had trouble trying to find a heat-proof container that wouldn’t irk the wife if I couldn’t get the wax completely out of it later. Settled on this:

The tomatoes went to good use. They’re stewing with a chuck roast.

Everything set to go.

Fondue?

I cut a plug out of closed cell foam to block off the chamber.

I gave it a soak in the wax and then hit it with the hair dryer on hot and high, letting the wax soak in. Did this a few times, and then wiped off the excess with a paper towel.

I’m gonna smoke it this evening. All in all, I think it went pretty well. I wouldn’t be afraid to do another. Maybe with a more adventurous design.

It is, but seeing it with the stem on now, I’m not feeling like the stummel is too chunky anymore. It is a larger pipe, but I don’t think the proportions look goofy anymore. I think I’ll leave it smooth. It just won’t be a clencher.

I assume you know this but don't use bullets to carve the pipe, even if you are a crack shot.
