I like Granger, not every day, but as nostalgia smoke. My dad smoked it for decades daily.

It's not quite as mellow as either Prince Albert or Carter Hall, but it is a good old rough cut

burley. Some complain about the casing, some kind of dressing mysteriously described as

the Wellman's Process, but I can't taste it much. I think Granger is one of the grand old burley

over-the-counter tobaccos, and who can resist the pointer dog on the can or pouch. To top

it off, my wife grew up on a farm just outside (or maybe just inside) a little town called Granger.

So, there's an answer, three hours later, no one else likes Granger all that much. But if you do, feel free

to join this exotic minority of one.

Hey mso ... is that just outside of South Bend?

I had a friend that grew up in Valparaiso.
Granger has not made it into my stash yet for some reason.

I like CH and PA so it stands to reason that I should at least try it.

My wife's hometown of Granger is in the upper northeast corner of Missouri, about ten miles from the Iowa line

and maybe fifteen miles from the Mississippi River. She grew up on a farm without running water or electricity

for much of her girlhood. Now the town is mostly overtaken by a wood pallet company. All the stores and post

office are long gone, the schools and churches abandoned, or maybe one still in use, pop. about 40 people, if that.

She spent her working life in Manhattan and living a Greenwich Village and on Long Island. Extremes.

Yes mso, I used to smoke it when I was in college, Cornell it was available in Ithaca and was cheap, not available in the Hudson Valley though, just the Internet retailers, aro's here now, but I don't think I could handle the Burley Bite anymore. Back then it got the ladies, thought I was a tobacconist mixed half Granger and half Kentucky Club, everybody was on Marlboro cig kick back then, me and old Medico prince and ziplock bag and a box of Diamond matches! I was a hit at the bars, when we could smoke. "Ah The Days of Wine and Roses"

Even back then, natenice1, smoking Granger was a distinction. I don't get that much bite from the current version.

It boasts on the can about being "Mild--Fragrant--Cool." Cornell has those palisades (haven't been there, but have

seen the photos) good pipe smoking landscape, it would seem.

One reason Granger may not be smoked much is their distribution. Most of the online retailers have it, but I don't

think over-the-counter blends are a big online seller, in general. Smoke shops often have Carter Hall and Prince

Albert, but rarely Granger. The brand was sold some years ago, and I'm not sure it has ever quite found its place

with the new owner. They have maintained the brand, but not too much more.

Great pipe smoking landscape right on that and Granger too same as some of the other drugstore blends of days gone by, Velvet is still around by the internet, Union Leader, Rum and Maple all but extinct. Just some older drugstore blends were different then, maybe my tongue is just calloused. But it still stays good ole Mixture # 79 it gets a bad rap but honestly I would take it over PA and Half and Half!

I did what I called the "OTC" shootout. True to proper fashion I actually made a point of only acquiring them Over the Counter at various drug stores. Granger was not one of them as I couldn't find it at any of the places I went, nor was Velvet. Keep in mind all I was sampling were the "unflavored" varieties. Thus far, I found the following to be my order of preference.
1. Carter Hall (Great smoke has a place in my stock at any given time when I'm looking for just something to puff on

2. Prince Albert (I used to cycle off between PA and CH, but found myself reaching for CH more often.)

3. SWR (just meh..I'll try it again, and maybe mix something with it to kick it up, but once it's gone, I dont think I'll be revisiting.)

4. Half and Half (didn't like either half at all, no idea what I'll do with the rest I have)

Defargin I neglected Carter Hall but you are correct, that and Mixture #79 for me SWR not! Tried and true pipers here I am an aro fan exclusively P&W but if it's The Captain or H&H I would take the latter.

I've enjoyed the little bit of Granger that I tried, sadly no one local carries it. Not something I would choose every day, but it was enjoyable.

I haven't had Granger in 25 years. Like you, I have some fondness for codger burley blends (though not lately, I've not been getting on well with burley) but my go-to in that category is CH.

I tried Granger for the first time last year, and it's been my daily smoke ever since. I tried many pouches and tins looking for a favorite, always following a recommendation from friends or online. They were all good, but I discovered I like plain, mostly unchanged tobacco flavor.

Like Twinkies and Little Debbie cakes, Granger will last indefinitely once you open the tub. As long as you snap back the lid, it won't go dry. Which is good and bad, but interesting. Like the Twinkies people nail to the wall. If anything, I think the Granger mellows a little.
