Irish - all the advice above matches my sentiments. Invicta right now has a Christmas sale, and I'm pleased with mine. Estates from the big old line firms can be excellent as they have old and seasoned wood. Another second that is often inexpensive is GBD's Digby. Old Parkers (Dunhill seconds) can be as good as the Savorys - I haven't made up my mind about the current run.

One word...COMOYS, but i'll second the notion for an older GBD...Great smokers. Im sure whatever you get it'll be a great pipe anyhow.
