My wife got for my birthday a modern reprint of the 1886 "Tobacco: Growing, Curing & Manufacturing. A handbook for planters in all parts of the World." It is SUCH a fascinating and informative read. One example that springs to mind is that I got more detail about the mysterious Syrian Latakia from a single paragraph written 130 years ago than I have from the last ten years on internet forums.
It is old enough to be in the public domain, I found it free as an ebook quite easily with google, although I am happy to have a paper copy because I find that much easier to read than a screen. Here is the link though: tobacco ebook
I nearly cried when I read that duty on locally produced tobacco here in New Zealand back in 1886 was 1 shilling per pound, to stimulate the home economy!!!!!!
I am being summoned for dinner, will come back to this
Isaac
