While a freshman at the UW-Madison, I took up pipe smoking (among other things)

I acquired three pipes from Lou's Tobacco Bar on State St in Madison.

When I gave up pipe smoking, I gave them to my brother-in-law. I had not smoked the pipes since my freshman year.

Last year he returned the pipes.

Yesterday I smoked this Meerschaum Bulldog for the first time again in 54 years!

Nice smoke.

Don't know who Lou's had making the pipe for them?-Richard

As bonanza points out, I don't think the material of the pipe is Meerschaum. Is that the brand? It's hard to track down the sources on house pipes, but sometimes you can suss it out by shape and design. Even when the company selling the house pipes exists, they often don't know how they sourced the pipe, since they often move from one source to the next over the years. Look at Meerschaum pipes online and I think you'll agree, this is an attractive briar pipe, unless there's a Meerschaum liner hiding in the bowl that doesn't show.

Nice looking pipe, and welcome back! But as noted, it's a very unique meer, not so much if it's a briar pipe. But still grand.

I bought my first pipe in the same pipe shop 10 years later in 1973. It was just called the Tobacco Bar then no longer Lou's
That pipe certainly looks like its briar not meerschaum

Wooooooow, that truly is impressive. Very beautiful pipe, I love it. But may I ask, why did you give up pipe smoking?

Welcome back (but I think that pipe shown is made of briar). I had not heard of Lou's. Can you show the stamping on the other side of your bulldog, that might show who made it for the shop.

Whoop's!

Should have Posted Meerschaum lined.

Other side just reads 'Imported Briar'.

If I had to guess, Kaywoodie maybe made the pipe but who knows?

Why DID I give up the pipe? -Richard

Brother-in-law says he smoked it but since the markings are still fairlly crisp, probably not much.

One can clearly see the demarcation of the meer lining in the bowl.

If I remember it was one of the nicest pipes in Lou's at the time I purchased it.

Thanks for all the comments.-Richard

BTW smoked with a GQ 'Peak Park Mix' Robert Kimberly Mix.

Shame Glynn closed down.
