Hello All,
Just before my wife and I (My wife) made the decision (Edict) to stop buying pipes for a while, I won a couple auctions on ebay and I have some nomenclature questions:
The first: A Dunhill Double Patent Shell Briar FET that was listed as being a 1933. In utilizing the dating key on pipehil, everytime I try to date this pipe it indicates 1928. Can anyone confirm either date for me? I have attached a picture of the nomenclature, which clearly has a small underlined "8" after the patent numbers.
The second: A post-transition Barling I scooped up cheap has on odd "B" stamped on the side of the model number. I consulted Jesse the Barling sage on this one, and he said he has no idea and has never seen it before. Anybody know what this "B" indicates?
Thanks for any help provided!

I know nothing of Barling, but that Dunhill is certainly a 1928. Very cool!
Thanks! I was pretty sure when I was bidding on it, but didn’t want to consult until it was in my hands, haha. What I didn’t realize is that apparently 1928 is the year Alfred retired. Kind of a cool coincidence.

Thanks! I thought so too. It was pretty cheap but the grain looked great and it seemed in good condition so I scooped it up :)
Now if I can only find out about this mysterious B....

So, it's a STRAIGHT GRAIN. From the 1962 retailers Catolog Size Chart: Size 2, Shape 26, 5 taper stem. I have a Barling from this period that also has the shape number on the right hand side of the shank. The B...I've got nothing.

Well, I've never seen a cased set where the pipes were stamped A and B, so I doubt that is the answer. The font is unusual, not typical of any Barling nomenclature I've seen. The position of the TVF stamp and the model number make it later than 1964. But that "B", if B it is, is a new one to me. Looks more like a 3.
Just another mystery waiting to be solved.
