1917 WW1 Pipe Question

I'm restorating old family photos and do re-colorations.

On this photo from 1917, taken near Verdun, my grand-grandfather is smoking this kind of pipe - and i was getting curious about it.

It seems to have a little type of dome on top and also some kind of foot/stander at it's bowl (wich seems unusual) - was searching the web but couldn't find any similar - so you specialist here are my last hope.

Can anyone identify this (kind of) pipe and deliver a photo?

Search for Tyrolean pipes and see if that’s what it was. Sorry I don’t have a photo handy.

In all fairness if I had been alive in Verdun after 1916 I would have had that look on my face, too.

Looks like an old German Imperial or German Stag.

Iron Cross ribbon, trench watch with quick release clasp, maybe German or might have been a battle field pick up. Not sure about the badge on the tunic. He certainly has that haunted look in his eyes. Did he survive WW1?

I hope you are able to gather a story together around this photo/ancestor. The way his face is lit, in combination with his expression, makes it seem like a still taken from a film set!

There is a World War I museum in Kansas City, Missouri, that likely has extensive archives as well as lots of personal effects from the war, from all sides I feel sure. If you could send them the photo electronically or as a photo copy that shows the pipe clearly, they might be able to shed some light. I copied the military information off my wife's dad's grave marker and they were able to decode the acronyms. He was a teenage soldier during World War I who suffered a permanent disability from poison gas. He met General Pershing, a fellow Missourian, when the general had the ranks standing for inspection do an about face, and he inspected the back ranks! He picked out my wife's dad as a fellow Missourian and had a short chat. Later as a Veterans Hospital patient, he met Bess Truman when she was a judge's wife (Harry was just a judge then), and he met Abbot and Costello. He had sessions in Vets Hospitals his whole life, but made it into his late sixties.

Hey guys - thanks for your help!

i guess snagstangl nailed it, so i have to rethink my coloring...

He was my great grandpa, on that photo he is about 17 years old, serving the austrian-hungary army (was prussian by its own), was a pilot/observer so he haven't died in those trenches... (didn't served in ww2) - was a pilot in brasil after ww1 - went back to germany, died in the late 60s by accident

...yes his face is kind of lit/frozen - but remember the expressions of old bw photos about the early 1900 - there is no smiling because of that long exposure times those days...

i had to deal with a lot of historical facts while coloring )
