A few of us were watching this one. Time got away from me and I forgot to bid, so I lost it by only about $800....

(kidding, I was only watching)
I see 8-Dot Ashfords or Patent era Four Dots routinely listed for $600-$700 but I don't know if any have actually sold (several have been listed over and over again).
This one was advertised as a pre-WWII Patent Era pipe. The bowl looks like that but the longish stem looks more like an Ashford of a more recent vintage.
The 2nd place guy lost by $25, probably by placing his bid too early (5 minutes to go). Or, did he really lose?

The pipe does not have the stinger, and the stem still leaves me with more questions than answers. The last two bids on the pipe look like "crazy" (no one will bid THIS high) bids...

Another pre-war Ashford. Note the stem's length, bend, and taper...those were my initial concerns.

Here's my 46-79 Ashford. The dots on the Ebay pipe do seem smaller but the stem shape/size looks similar.

I thought George was going to show Chance how to take good pictures? The nomenclature pix are terrible (you can't see the Ashford stamp at all and little else).

Another eBay moment. Smaller dots, chunkier shank, longer stem with less bend. Not as appealing as SSJones pipe. We will have to see if the high bidder actually pays or retracts, etc. a frequent occurance on eBay events like this. Exactly as Jesse has identified in numerous posts about the "eBay Effect".

It's a fine pipe and that birdseye is fabulous, but I don't like it better than my Luciano slightly bent author, with a similarly configured bowl, especially since it didn't cost me a grand.

That'll be next month. He's coming to KC for the show, and will stick around afterward for some shop action. I'll work photomatogramaphy into the "lesson plan."
