I picked up a mason jar of Dunhill Nightcap with a date sticker that would indicate it is about 10 years old. I opened the jar which was sealed very tightly . The tobaccos seems pretty dry. Is there a safe way to kinda moisten the tobacco before smoking? Thanks

Yes, many ways to rehydrate tobacco, but first the question must be asked: What indicates it's too dry? It may be perfect for smoking as is.
My method is to soak a piece of terra-cotta in water and place that directly in the jar. But since I use good jars to begin with, and I dry my tobaccos down as soon as I open and jar them, I haven't had to rehydrate for a long time.

Ooh, yes please. I love to mix old dry and (aged) Dunhill Nightcap at 1-to-1 ratio with fresh, moist Nightcap. Mix well by hand in a bowl and let sit in a mason jar with lid on tight for week. Smoke and smile. I learned this trick from Rick Newcombe’s books.your purchase was good. Smoke up.

First time I have smoked Nightcap. Now I see what all the hubub is about. Dang this is good. jpmcwjr you might be right. It just seemed so much drier than the other tobacco tins

I have opened.

Dunhill comes drier than most tinned tobacco (perfect moisture IMO). Also, I have found most tobaccos smoke and taste better on the dry side. As long as it's not crunchy, I should be good.

I'll go along with the trend here to say dry may be just the way you'll like it. I'd try several bowls before hydrating it. Often time a blend shows up better dryer.

That must be a treat. I am sure the latakia may have slightly faded away, but non the less it is still a good find. Like the guys above mentioned, try it "dry" before playing with moisture level.

Madox07,

I think you are right. This is almost completely black now compared to new nightcap in a tin. Still tastes pretty darn good though.

I was recently gifted some 10yr old VaPer from a friend. It was in a vacuum sealed bag & this confirmed that such bags allow moisture to escape over long periods. The baccy was extremely dry; some of it practically crunchy. Well, I put the baccy in a mason jar with a 65%RH Boveda pack for a week. After that week, the baccy is perfect. It’s a delicious smoke.

It seems you have already made up your mind, and good on you for just smoking it and seeing what all the fuss was about. I remember starting and worrying about moisture levels too, but slightly drier is where I found the sweet spot to be. It helps for the delighting too I find.
