    Broken Pipe - David Bryant

David Bryant, England's greatest ever lawn bowler and unrepentant pipe smoker, has just passed away. The descriptions of him combining pipe and sport are superb. From the Guardian: "Few sporting world champions have won their medals while smoking a pipe, but David Bryant, who has died aged...

Rejoice! Watch City's Rouxgaroux Is Back From The Dead!

Yes, it is true. Ernie the magician has resurrected this fine blend which was dead and gone only a few days ago. Rougaroux is back up on the website. I was at the shop only a few hours ago and stocked up. Here is a photo of Ernie on the job. Isn't it great to see somebody who loves their work...

Broken Pipe: Robert A. Peretti (1921-2019)

Robert A. Peretti, the third generation owner/operator of LJ Peretti in Boston, has just passed away. He created many of their blends and was truly a gentleman of a byegone age. It has been a difficult time for the shop. First Charlie, now Bob. I am lighting up a bowl of Tashkent in their honour.

Broken Pipe: Charlie Normand of L.J. Peretti

I am shocked to hear of his passing, as I was chatting with him in the shop only a month ago. He knew much about pipes and blending. RIP http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/bostonglobe/obituary.aspx?n=charles-a-normand&pid=189284799&fhid=4412

Rowan Atkinson, Maigret, and the Pipe

Rowan Atkinson, of Mr Bean fame, is about to appear on telly as the pipe smoking detective Maigret. I am thrilled that the antis were not allowed to airbrush out the briar. As the article in The Grauniad reports: “The pipe and pipe-smoking is definitely a very important part of Maigret, his...

Greg Pease's Virginia Cream is almost here

On his website http://www.glpease.com/ he has posted a video of a review of his latest blend, Virginia Cream. I have been smoking a pre-production release for a while now, and am enjoying it tremendously. While it may be called an aromatic, it is not in the least goopy or lacking in subtlety...

Driving from California to Massachusetts on Route 80/90

Hello everybody, I have just sold my mid-century modern house in California, designed and built by Joseph Eichler, himself inspired by a Frank LLoyd Wright house he lived in during the 1940's. This week I will be loading a truck full of books, computers, 200 lbs of pipe tobacco and two cats...

GL Pease Renaissance - unavailable for many years now

I am sitting outside going over some business correspondence on the laptop and decided to take a break with a pipe full of Greg's Renaissance. This is a rare 10 year old tin and is of course long discontinued due to the warehouse fire in 2004 that decimated their supply of aged Syrian Latakia...

    Broken Pipe: Tony Benn

Tony Benn, one the grand old men of British politics, has just passed away. He was very old school, and an unrepentant pipe smoker all his life, long after tobacco become synonymous with devil worship. He stuck to his principles. I cannot think of anyone else who struggled (or even tried) to...

För svenskarna - For the Swedes

In the world of pipes, we speak of aging tobacco and swollen tins. Well, the Swedes do something similar with herring. Read about it here.

One for the Brits: Pipe Aston, Herefs.

Quite by accident I found a reference to a hamlet called Pipe Aston, named apparently after the clay pipes that used to be made there. Does anybody know anything about this place? Are there other towns in the UK named after pipes? http://www.hellfirecorner.co.uk/TV/pipeaston.htm...

Tony Benn's Pipes - For British Fans

Here are some links with great shots of the grand old man of Labour with his pipes. He's a clencher for sure. I like the attitude he projects as he still publicly enjoys a hobby now equated with Satan worship...
