    E-Cigs Linked To "Popcorn Lung"

The chemical made responsible for popcorn lung is Diacetyl (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diacetyl). It is present in buttery flavors, so if you make a lot of microwave popcorn, you are probably exposed to it already. It is also present in cigarette smoke in 10-100 times higher concentration...

    Unknown Danger of e-Cigarettes

I have been occupied with e-cigarettes due to recent developments in my job. Most scientific studies claim, that the vapor from these devices is less harmful, than tobacco smoke, and contains less carcinogenic substances. Of course there are no studies about long time exposure. A few facts: -...

    The "New" Irish Flake?

I am sad to say, that the original IF is gone for good. The MacBaren offering is of course different, and not to my liking, but this is personal taste, but even the K&K Stirling Flake is maybe based on the IF recipe, but obviously some changes were done, IMO to reduce costs. Stock up, if you...

    Tragic Shootings

Very sad indeed. I believe it has something to do with a certain attitude and fatality in the minds of some people and the media attention, these deeds get. Everbody, who is thinking to go on such a rampage must know, that it will end in his demise. Instead of just blowing his own brains out...

So, in Light of the Recent Esoterica Squall.

The Esoterica blends are sold in Europe under the Germain's brand. Different names, same blends.

FDA trying to mess the pipe world

I hope everybody sees the signs and stocks up now. You can write mails to authorities until your fingers bleed, but a cellar, which is going to last you a life time, will let you sleep better. I have been cellaring up since some time and although it was not easy to free the financial means, I...

So, in Light of the Recent Esoterica Squall.

The tins are IMO going mainly to Europe. There is not a large market for bulk tobaccos in Europe, as taxes and regulations make them overly expensive. 8oz would be a tremendous amount of tobacco in Europe. Most tobaccos are sold in 50 or 40g pouches or tins. Some blends are available in 100g...

Is a Pipe Really a Pipe If It Has Never Been Smoked?

A pipe is a pipe, even if unsmoked. It has proper drilling, a fine grain and can be a sculpture. But it is lifeless, until it is smoked, because only then it can deliver the great pleasure, pipe smoking brings. I often see showcase pipes, like the famous Savinelli Autograph, which probably never...

Your Favorite Brand of Pipes for a Quality Smoke????

Savinelli are the most consistent for me. Never had a bad one and I have 10+ of them. I have nothing against Petersons or Stanwells and most of them are fine pipes, but when I have a really good smoke, it's always from a Sav.

Help with Non aromatic that doesnt suck

People always connect Latakia blends with blends, which contain 25-40% Latakia, but there are blends, where Latakia is used as spice with 5-10%. In them it gives a certain smokiness, but dos not overwhelm the rest. Additionally, there is an enormous range between high flavored aromatics and...

    Rusty tins

20 years later? For one year old tins, you might be able to get a replacement, but you would get a new tin with maybe the same issue. The consensus seems to be, to open all possible affected tins and jar them up for later consumption. For resale, this is of course no option.

    Relights

I have been in situations, where I did not have a tamper, or usage would not been advised, e.g. while driving. I have the impression, that using your fingers to tamp, gets you immediate feedback, if you are smoking too hot. If you burn your finger in the half second, which you need to press down...

    Rainer Barbi

Yes, he was a great pipemaker and a very nice guy. I only knew him by conversations in newsgroups and forums, but I admired the passion for his profession. I never could aquire a pipe from him, when they were still affordable, but I will smoke a pipe in his honor.

    The Zippo Factory is Haunted?

I don't believe in ghosts, but I don't think people, who see them, are crazy. I think, light can travel in ways, our science cannot explain. If these sightings are (light) echos from the past, or even from a different dimension is beyond my imagination, but that there are places, where it...

Switching a Pipe From English to Virginia Based Blends

Yes, it will only take a few bowls to remove the Latakia ghost from the pipe. With certain aromatics, it is much harde, or needs special treatment.

    Three Nuns From MacBaren

drcarlo is obvioulsy not located in the US, so he smoked the Orlik VaPer, as well as the Orlik VaBur blend. His gripe is with the MacBaren VaBur not being the same quality, as the Orlik VarBur, to which I agree. I don't even compare to the VaPer, as it would be to compare apples to oranges. What...

    Rattray's Old Perth

Don't use a power tool to open the airway. Start with a 3mm drill, put it in the chuck and turn it by hand, then the 4 mm, or even the 3,5mm, if you have one, in between. If the resistance increases, stop and take a look with a light, if you are drilling beside the actual airway. Always have a...

    Three Nuns From MacBaren

It is clear, that this new Three Nuns reincarnation is far away from the original, but even if you forget the name, it's by no means a great blend. There are many better VarBurs and selling a mediocre blend with a famous name is just lame, which I definitely wouldn't have expected from MacBaren.

    Rattray's Old Perth

The only Rattray's pipe I have had a draw hole of little more than 2mm. Drilling it up to 4mm was the first thing I did with this pipe.

BIG Complaint About Peterson Irish Flake

This post made me rush out and get a tin of Irish Flake lol. When I first tried it a few years ago, it was too strong for me, due to smoking it too fast. Now I have it smoldering in a Peterson SH Baker Street and I would not go so far, that I would become a Peterson hermit, but it's very good.
