    Wear and Tear Versus Pristine

My regular pipes are treated well and get regular maintenance (thorough cleaning and polish of wood and stem), though they are absolutely smoking tools and have some nicks and scratches from transportation, use and accidents. My older pipes are all pretty low quality and used in 'high risk'...

    Matches?

When I started smoking pipes, I would use the same cedarwood matches I used for my cigars. These were pretty long however, and much of each match was wasted due to the 'false light,' seeing as two matches would be required anyway. Therefore I changed to regular size safety matches, observing the...

Babies Come From Storks, But Where Does Briar Come From?

To answer your second question, as far as I know 'middle of the line' manufacturers will sell high quality blocks they find during quality control to the more exclusive manufacturers.

    Russ' Article on Sherlock Holmes

Hmm thanks Russ... Might I assume that Schipper's Tabak was not a 'proper' ship tobacco at all then, only being it in name?

    Russ' Article on Sherlock Holmes

That was a good read, thanks for linking to it. The first time I read the complete Holmes long stories was when I was a teenager, and I've revisited the Holmes fiction several times through the years. Also, while the new Holmes action movies are not exactly my cup of tea, I thoroughly enjoyed...

    Meerschaum Sub-Forum?

Count me in, personally I think separate forums for meers, briars and cobs would be great to concentrate the knowledge as someone said above. Rarer pipes like calabash and clays could just go in the general forums. A pipe maker's forum could also be a great resource for both the artisans and the...

Ye Olde Forgotten Pipe Term 2-Fer: Estaminet & Chasse

These old words are thoroughly enjoyable, thank you for your effort in getting them to us!

    Brand New Pipe Smoker

Welcome, and good luck! Remeber to ask about anything at all, and you'll get many a good smoke. Pipe smoking is as much an art as a sensory experience, and it will take some smokes to just be able to technically get a good smoke - at that point, more attention can be paid to the sensory aspect -...

    Bent Or Straight? Your Opinions

The matter is mostly aesthetical to me. My first favourite pipe was a bent, now it is a straight. Ordered my meer bent though. As others have said, the bent is more comfortable to use when the hands are occupied as they are not as heavy to clench with the center of gravity being moved closer to...

You Dropped Your Pipe Where?!?! Tell Me Your Horror Story

Three of my pipes are more 'expensive' than the rest, and despite the care I have taken the last two have dropped on the pavement on their first day of use, getting a tiny nick. When it happened with the first I was a bit miffed, with the second I just shrugged and stoically concluded it now...

    Lost A Smoking Spot

Sad to hear it. Times change, and not always for the better. Then again, as a friend once told me, after storm there is always calm. Your old smoking spot will rest safely in your memory, perhaps you will get many a good smoke while walking around looking for a new one. Good luck.

    Tobacco Ash Question

@dms17: Indeed. However, to ensure my pipes do not go sour, I will take particular care with the smoke following a 'bad' smoke, so as to properly dry out the bowl. Thus, smokes that I 'technically' consider 'bad' can still have been enjoyable smokes.

After 30 Years, It Feels So Good....

...if I had not just emptied my wallet to get my first meerschaum, I'd ask if it was for sale and what you would charge... That pipe struck a nerve! Sterling work!

    Tobacco Ash Question

Most of my smokes will leave a little dottle. To judge whether I had a good smoke or not, I will inspect the bowl after emptying it - any sign of moisture indicates a bad smoke. If the bowl is dry, I call it a good smoke even if some dottle remains.

New Fikri Baki Meerschaum on the Way...

That is beautiful! Looked at Bakis though could not get them on my budget - though I've decided to start saving up each month in order to afford the more expensive pipes later, and will decidedly keep my eye on Baki.

    Giving up

As foggymountain wrote, I've read here that if wax gets into the bowl during manufacture, the breaking in will be very unpleasant. This might be the issue, though as I'm not there with you I can't say. At any rate, I hope the manufacturer will get back to you. Hope you get that pipe fixed...

That's a beautiful pipe, can't wait for my meerschaum to get here!

How Do You Smoke a "Twist?"

Only smoked twist a few times and treated it like flake - took the slices, folded and stuffed them into the bowl (as best I could). It smoked like flake too as I recall, slow and cool. Tried rubbing it too, though I've found that I prefer not rubbing my tobacco. In my experience, the main...

I Am Having A Heat Issue, Help?

For an extended period I smoked only flakes, and flake smoking is a wholly separate skill from smoking regular pipe tobacco. The first few smokes were ruined and had to be dug out of the bowl! The first technique that worked for me was the fold and stuff method, smoking the flake lengthwise...
