I am mentoring this pipe restoration

A cynic probably would suggest that, but the truth is that the person I was mentoring never finished the restoration. He may pick it up again someday, and if he does, I will be glad to post it here for everyone. Wes

    Restoration Guidance Respectfully Requested

xrundog, I think I am going to do my own video for the heck of it.

    Advise on cleaning these?

I would go with sablebrush52 suggestion and search for cleaning techniques. Everyone has there own way of doing things but there is a ton of knowledge out there. If you run into any problems let me know and I would be glad to add in my suggestions. It is truly amazing how well some of these...

Looking For Someone to Make a New Shank

I would agree with mso489 and just not worry about it unless it becomes more of a problem. I have replaced a similar shank for an individual using imitation ivory that turned out nice. The key is getting the lathe set up right to match the original taper as most of these shanks are/were made...

Can I smoke and clean this pipe?

Believe it or not, I have seen one other pipe in all of the restorations I have done that was similar to this one. It was not identical, but at the time I thought I would never see another one. I agree with all of the above statements. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to clean it up...

    Medico Medalist restoration

Thank you everyone. This was a fun little one to work on. As good as it turned out, I think I am either going to sell it or maybe donate it to one of the people out there donating pipes to the military men and women serving abroad.

    Medico Medalist restoration

Here are some pictures of a Medico Medalist restoration I just finished up. It was a fun little restoration. Wes www.rebuiltbriars.com [URL=http://s1295.photobucket.com/user/Wes_Keenan/media/image.jpg5_zps8wkrte1d.jpg.html][/URL

    Blockage in Pipe Stem

I agree with ssjones. I have had pipes on my bench that were plugged solid with a tarry mess and years of neglect that needed a ton if work just to pass a thin wire. To be honest, some of the things you see come out of pipes like that make you wonder how in the world someone thought that was...

Vulcanite stem oxidation: what is totally unsavable?

I agree with all of the above post as I have yet to run into a stem that was too badly oxidized to save. My bigger concern is also erosion of the material to bite marks.

    Need Stem Wizard

There is still a bit of shrinkage, but it is less than just using straight CA.

    Need Stem Wizard

ejames, they have some great files. I have a few of their files and love them. They make some high quality files that have dead faces and live edges that I use all of the time. Of course they have them the other way as well. They have a lot of good tools for people working on pipes. I have a a...

    Need Stem Wizard

These Fret Dams are the cat's meow. If you want to give one a try send me your mailing address via PM and I will be glad to cut you some off to try.

    Need Stem Wizard

AntBauerS, I have used the Stew-Mac undiluted so far with very good results. It behaves as you would expect any other medium viscosity CA glue to behave. I wouldn't say it is any more or less stiff. I also suggest that if you order glue from Stew-Mac, that you also order a sheet of Teflon Fret...

    Need Stem Wizard

Let me share the best method I have found for storing opened CA glues, put it in the refrigerator. I have been using CA glues to build RC Airplanes for a very long time, I even worked in a hobby store while in college that did primarily just RC airplanes, and I always store my opened bottles in...

    Need Stem Wizard

Good morning. If you decide to use the IC-2000 Rubber-Toughened CA Adhesive, please be aware that by its self, it isn't going to be quite hard enough. When using it I mix it about 50/50 with regular slow setting CA glue and then use it to fill the dent. Also, Stewart Macdonald (stewmac.com)...

    Bleach and Vulcanite?

Hunter, I don't think my process is any less labor intensive and while I do occasionally use bleach, I stick to oxiclean most of the time. As far as sanitizing goes, Oxygen Bleach (which is what oxiclean is) does sanitize just as well , and in some cases better than bleach. Yes, oxygen bleach...
