Going to the Back of the Cellar

2013 Union Square and 2008 Escudo. Needed my aged Virginia fix, lol.

    Lighter Recommendations?

Fun fact, the Zippo pipe insert is the same size as a regular. If you already have a Zippo case you like you can put your pipe one in it and now it's a pipe Zippo too!

First Smoke in a Briarworks/Moonshine Morta

I know some people here swear there is no reason to build up a cake, maybe because so many pipes come with some type of pre cake or lining these days, but I had noticable flavors from new briar and morta pipes that were "raw" when I first got them. Building up even a thin cake took that away...

GLP Union Square at 10 Years

Smoking a 2013 version out of a clay right now. It's subtle even when young, and the sweetness seems to mellow with age. I find that any 100% Virginia with age becomes easier to smoke, but harder to tease out flavor, and this is no exception. The upside is that if you have the patience varying...

Bourbon and Coffee But Not Beer?

Most mass produced beers are not great with anything but light aros. Hoppy beers can be good with English blends but the hop variety really matters there. A lot of stouts in the US pair well with Virginia and Vapers, especially barrel aged ones. Session beers like ESB and British milds are...

    Cleaning Pipes

I like to do a run with a bristle cleaner dipped in high proof alcohol, the kind safe to drink, until it comes out mostly clean. Then regular cleaners until they come out dry. Then trim the cake with a pipe tool and paper towel. This is assuming no ghosting. For the outside I wipe bowl and stem...

    Your Favorite Blends to Age

Escudo, Irish Flake, almost everything from GL Pease but especially the San Francisco blends, Squadron Leader, Balkan Sobranie, and Presbyterian. Smoking a Union Square I jarred in 2013 from I think a 2010 "Tin". The pease stuff really improves with even 2 to 3 years and a few hours drying...

    Finally Got A Tablet

I had an ASUS Transformer for years, and just got a Galaxy 10 Pro for work. It has made forum browsing while smoking outside a lot easier!

    Blues Man

Just wanted to add that there are three young guys pushing the genre. Derek Trucks, Jack White and John Mayer. Do not under estimate Mayers playing, BB did and got that "oh shit" look on stage a few years ago :)

    Food and Drink Tobacco Pairing

I could probably write a book on this, but I'm on my tablet so I'll leave the most important observation I have found so far. Most dry sparkling wines pair amazingly with Va and Vapers. Also, when pairing red wine and tobacco keep carbonated water handy to drink and rinse with. Sip your pipe, then...

    I Have a Restaurant Recommendation

Another chef 0n that show also has an awesome place outside of Santa Rosa CA called Zazu, highly recommend it.

My First New Savinelli Trevi 320KS from 4noggins

I second starting with a sweet virginia or VaPer. Flakes might be a little tough with that bowl, maybe some of the gl pease fog city line like telegraph hill?

    In Case Anyone Cares

Don't know if you are all aware of this, but BIC lighters have a lot more flint than they need. If you know other people who use them you can collect the empties, pop off the top and get the extra flint. They are actually good quality, haven't bought any in years..

    Maybe a Churchward...

If you can find one I highly recommend a bjarne churchwarden.

    65 % ABV--Worlds Strongest Beer!!!

This is not beer, this is a distilled spirit. They have used a cold distillation method instead of a heated distillation method, but it is still distillation. In Germany they make Eisbock using the same method, but if the process is done more than once it is Beer Schnapps and must be sold as a...

    The After Midnight Club

One of my favorites, and not as expensive with absinthe legal again. Herbsaint and pernod never did it for me, too sweet. Tonight I'm going old school, half cognac half rye :-)

    The After Midnight Club

That sounds good, i might have a sazerac with some cumberland.

    The After Midnight Club

Novelist, have you tried Old Dublin yet? It's one of my cold weather favorites, along with GL Pease Cumberland though that's a VaPer.

    The After Midnight Club

Chill-in is right, finally cooling off here. Actually feels like fall a little!
