    I'm a Papaw Again!

My second grandson, Elias Wolf Owsley, came into the world 7/14/16 at 9.2 pounds and 22" long. His middle name is after me; I've always been Wol or Wolfy. Needless to say, I'm pretty proud. This was the first time I got to hold him.

My Experience with Xikar Customer Service/Warranty Work

I recently sent my Xikar Pipeline in for repairs: the fill tube was off center, the flint wheel housing had become loose and caused the wheel to jam. Within a few days of them receiving my lighter I got an email saying they had received and repaired my lighter and it was being sent back to me...

Anything Special to Maintain a Clay Pipe?

A friend gifted me this clay pipe; it's the first clay pipe I've owned. So far I've smoked it only a half dozen times or so but really like it. My question is this: are there any specific things one should do to maintain a clay pipe? Obviously, alcohol should be used minimally if at all; I get...

Cedar and Antler Tamper My Son Made

My son sawed out a block of cedar to carve this tamper. He put whitetail antler on both ends and used a mahogany stain. It came out real nice IMHO.

IM Corona Old Boy Father's Day Gift

My Father's Day gift arrived Thursday; I'm just getting around to posting it. Thus far I love it! I chose matte black because it won't look dirty so quickly like the chrome does. The heft and feel are great. I read they have made the finish 5 times more durable but it'll be "living" in a...

Do IM Corona Lighters Really Need IM Corona Flints?

So, after years of wanting an IM Corona Old Boy I used my Father's Day gift card to order one today. I see that IM Corona also makes flints; it seems they are softer than "regular" flints from my reading. But do I really need those special flints? I sure don't want to foul up my new lighter by...

    Greg's Kit Project

Well, today I final made a start! I had forgotten that last summer or maybe spring is ordered two kits from Steve at Vermont Freehand so I was actually ready to go. Here's a video of the block and a little intro: http://youtu.be/UiE6_2QEFGs I have made a small amount of progress: de-barked the...

    Tidings of Joy

I wanted to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and report some good news on my end. I've gotten great results with my latest lab work, with my A1C dropping to 5.2! Although I'm recovering from a sinus infection still, I feel so much better than I have in a very long time. It's truly a season...

    Undressing a "Dress" Pipe

A few days ago I received a Stanwell Black Diamond in the mail, gifted to me from a friend on Instagram. The easy clean up I expected turned into a full blown project, with me "undressing" the pipe and restaining it. Here's the rest of the story if you're interested...

    Tools to Get Started

I thought a quick run down on the few tools I'm using for this project would be helpful. Everything here is available at Home Depot except the vulcrylic file, which came from Amazon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4Aw4djljoo

    Christmas Cheer 2013

I've not written many reviews but am going to give it the old college try here. Okay, today I start with McClelland Christmas Cheer 2013. I'm not reading the other comments and reviews beforehand so I don't slant my thoughts. The blend presented as a lovely broken flake, mixed medium to dark...

    Making a Rusticating Tool

In another thread on carving my own pipe someone asked about how I rusticated the pipe. I made a tool from a screwdriver bit and used a power driver with it. If you're interested you can read about it here Make a Rustication Tool

    I Finally Carved a Pipe

Well, I finally got around to carving my first pipe (from a kit); my son inspired me though he's ahead of me in skills! I made a terrible cut with a coping saw on the front and it almost ruined the kit. I managed to salvage it pretty well though I think. I mad my own rustication tool, a process...

Grooming the Fur Kids - Holiday Haircuts

Well, this morning I am working on finishing up our holiday grooming of our three fur kids. All are done with their hair cuts, two are bathed, and one has her nails clippers; whew! The last two are terrors on nail clipping so I'm not really looking forward to it. My wife, though she insists she...

My Son's Third Pipe - No Power Tools Used

This is my son's third pipe he's made so far. He used a coping saw, various files and sandpapers, no power tools, except the buffer, in the shaping process. It was a kit from PIMO that I got him last spring. The stem still needs to be finished but I think he did a great job!

Old Meerschaum Bowl Re-Stemmed and Restored

Too Busy For My Own Good

Well, the last month or so I've felt so much better as I work to get my diabetes under control. In fact, I think I almost feel normal (for me) again for the first time in a long time. It's good to get my health heading in the right direction and I'm dropping some unneeded pounds in the process...
